Thiel edges Grove City, 7-6

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a 7-6 decision Friday afternoon at Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Thiel. Grove City (23-12, 15-7 PAC) had the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the top of the ninth but could not complete its comeback.

Junior catcher Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) and freshman left fielder Shane Hammel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge) each collected three hits to help pace Grove City's 14-hit attack.

Senior DH Travis Royer (Forest, Va./Twin Valley, Pa.) and junior second baseman Brandon Gresh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) each added two hits while junior first baseman Matt Waugaman (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and junior right fielder Nolan Myers (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) both doubled.

Sophomore pitcher Drew Landis (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) started and fired seven innings for Grove City. Landis allowed six hits and struck out three but took the setback. Freshman reliever Phil Bell (Poland, Ohio/Heartland Christian) allowed one run in the eighth inning.

Grove City clinched one of the four berths in the season-ending conference tournament when Waynesburg lost Friday afternoon at Saint Vincent. The Wolverines will host Thiel (24-10, 13-5) at 1 p.m. Saturday in a doubleheader at R. Jack Behringer Field.
