Wolverines wrap up conference play

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team closed its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Saturday afternoon by dropping both ends of a doubleheader against visiting Thiel at R. Jack Behringer Field. Thiel (27-10, 16-5 PAC) won the opener 7-5, then secured a 7-4 win in Game Two.

Junior first baseman Matt Waugaman (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) paced Grove City in the opener by going 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in. Senior designated hitter Travis Royer (Forest, Va./Twin Valley, Pa.) also doubled for the Wolverines (23-14, 15-9) while junior shortstop David Laylock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pine-Richland) singled twice and scored two runs.

Grove City took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Laylock scored on Waugaman's first double. Junior catcher Andy Fritz (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) singled in Waugaman, then came home on Royer's double.

Thiel scored once in the second, then took the lead for good with a four-run third inning. The Tomcats then added two insurance runs in the fourth.

Junior pitcher C.J. Hils (West Homestead, Pa./Central Catholic) started and yielded four runs in two innings. Freshman Micah Burke (Gilbert, Ariz./E.V.A.C.) allowed three unearned runs in a career-high four innings while senior Kenny Saltsman (Salem, Ohio/Salem) pitched a scoreless seventh.

Thiel limited Grove City to five hits in Game Two. Freshman left fielder Travis Auth (Medina, Ohio/Medina) doubled in Grove City's four-run fifth inning. An error helped ignite the Wolverine rally.

Junior Nolan Myers (Landsville, Pa./Hempfield) started for Grove City and allowed five earned runs in three innings. Saltsman pitched the final four innings in relief.

Grove City will close the regular season Tuesday with a non-conference home doubleheader against D'Youville. It will be Grove City's final preparation before the conference tournament May 12-14 in Crestview Hills, Ky.
