Three Grove City players competing in Tazon de Estrellas

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Three Grove City College football players have been named to Team Stars and Stripes, a Division III all-star team that will compete in the fourth annual Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) Saturday at 1 p.m. at La Fortaleza Azul (The Blue Fortress) in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Senior guard Josh Bermann (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline), senior inside linebacker Jason Ferguson (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) and senior tailback Shane Kaclik (Mars, Pa.) will help Team Stars and Stripes compete against a 64-man team of Mexican college all-stars from CONADIEP, the national conference of private schools in Mexico.

Bermann earned First Team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference and D3Football.com All-South Region Third Team honors following the 2012 season. His efforts helped Kaclik lead the conference with 1,098 rushing yards this fall. A team co-captain, Bermann also helped the Wolverines lead the conference in average time of possession (32:41) and red zone scoring as the Wolverines scored on 31 of their 37 (84 percent) trips inside the opposition's 20-yard line.

Ferguson led Grove City with 84 total tackles, including a team-high 10 for loss. He had 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble and an interception this season in 10 starts at middle linebacker. Ferguson finished his career fourth on Grove City's all-time tackles list with 313. He twice earned First Team All-PAC and made 37 career starts.

In addition to leading the league in rushing, Kaclik also led the conference with 1,218 yards from scrimmage. Kaclik scored a league-best 15 rushing touchdowns and finished second overall in the conference with 90 points. He became the third Grove City back to run for 1,000 yards in a season, joining Doug Steiner (1996-97) and R.J. Bowers (1997-2000). His 1,098 yards rank sixth on Grove City's all-time single-season list.

It is the third straight year that Grove City players have represented the United States in the Tazon de Estrellas. In 2010, offensive tackle Pete Polesnak helped Team Stars and Stripes to a 48-7 victory over the Mexican all-star team. Last year, nose tackle Jarred Frawley competed for Team Stars and Stripes in a 45-27 setback.

Polesnak is currently doing graduate work and playing football at University of Las Americas Pueblas. He will play for the CONADIEP squad Saturday.

Three Grove City players participated in the Tazon de Estrellas’ predecessor, the Aztec Bowl. Brock McCullough played for the United States in 2000 while Aaron Margo (2005) and Matt Gregg (2007) also played in the Aztec Bowl.

The United States is 5-1 with Grove City players competing in the Aztec Bowl or Tazon de Estrellas.
