W&J blanks GCC, 31-0
GROVE CITY, PA, October 6, 2001--Fourth-ranked Washington & Jefferson amassed 308 total offensive yards in the first half and rolled to its fifth straight victory, dealing host Grove City its second shutout in five seasons, 31-0.
The Presidents improved to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while the Wolverines dropped to 1-3 overall, 0-2 in the PAC.
W&J junior all-American quarterback Brian Dawson completed 18 of 27 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Dawson threw for 206 yards in the first half, connecting on 14 of 20 tosses, including TD strikes of 12 and eight yards. His prime target, junior split end Todd Fry, hauled in 10 passes for 118 yards -- his fifth straight 100-yard receiving game. Dawson hit on four of seven passes for 25 yards in the third quarter before sitting out the final frame. Junior halfback Joey Nichols added 114 yards rushing on 20 carries.
The Wolverines rushed for 241 yards in the game, paced by senior fullback Mike Orlando (Wickliffe, OH/Wickliffe), who ran for 105 yards on 21 carries -- his third straight 100-yard effort. Senior quarterback Mike Kashurba (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) picked up 81 yards rushing on 19 attempts and completed five of 14 passes for 38 yards. Senior split end Todd Gibson (Warren, OH/Champion) had three catches for 21 yards. Sophomore Steve Roberts (East Petersburg, PA/Hempfield) returned four kickoffs for 79 yards, including returns of 26 and 28 yards in the first quarter.
Grove City held W&J to 70 total offensive yards in the second half, 378 in the game. The Wolverines totaled 328 yards of offense.
Senior inside linebacker Adam Corbett (Warren, OH/Champion) recorded a team-high 12 tackles, including two of the Wolverines' five sacks on the day. Senior defensive end Jesse Kohser (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) and senior outside linebacker Jonathan Forbes (New Martinsville, WV/Magnolia) were also in on two sacks each. Sophomore cornerback Greg Grupp (Harmony, PA/Slippery Rock) picked off Dawson late in the second quarter, his second interception of the season.
W&J hit paydirt on two of its first three drives, going over 70 yards on seven plays each time. The Wolverines failed to advance the ball past W&J's 42 on their first seven possessions. In the second half, Grove City turned the ball over on downs twice inside the Presidents' 10.
The Wolverines were 2-for-14 on third down conversions.
Grove City will celebrate Homecoming next Saturday against the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets. Kickoff at Thorn Field is slated for 2:00 p.m.
