GROVE CITY, PA, October 13, 2001 -- A balanced offensive attack that accumulated 421 yards of yardage vaulted Waynesburg College to a 21-10 victory over Grove City College Saturday afternoon before a Homecoming crowd of 3,500 at Robert E. Thorn Field.

The Yellow Jackets (3-3, 2-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference) picked up 234 yards through the air and added 187 yards on the ground en route to their second straight victory. Waynesburg also converted 8 of 14 third-down opportunities and held a 6 1/2-minute edge in time of possession.

Grove City (1-4, 0-3 PAC) fell behind 21-3 in the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Waynesburg's Orlando Magruder with 3:01 left. But the Wolverines countered quickly with a 65-yard scoring drive. Quarterback Mike Kashurba (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) fired a 10-yard strike to Dan Stoffer (Canton, OH/GlenOak) and on third-and-2, Steve Roberts (East Petersburg, PA/Hempfield) burst through for a 33-yard pickup. Kashurba then lofted a 21-yard touchdown pass to senior split end Todd Gibson (Warren, OH/Champion) on a corner route and Matt Styer's (Greenford, OH/South Range) PAT cut the lead to 21-10.

Kashurba finished the afternoon with 184 yards passing on 14-of-26 accuracy. Gibson, meanwhile, pulled in a career-high eight passes for 119 yards, another career high.

"I thought Todd Gibson played well," 18th-year head coach Chris Smith said. "He did a great job of catching the football. We have to build on that."

At the 6:20 mark of the fourth quarter, Kyle Vuchak (Warren, OH/Howland) blocked a 33-yard field goal attempt by Scott Gusic. Grove City then commenced a drive that took the Wolverines into Yellow Jacket territory. Kashurba opened the drive with a 35-yard strike to Gibson. Two more Gibson catches took the ball down to the Waynesburg 31. But the drive eventually stalled and Grove City turned the ball over on downs with 3:46 left.

The Wolverines' comeback hopes took a severe blow in the first half when fullback Mike Orlando (Wickliffe, OH/Wickliffe) left with a knee injury. The senior rushed for 50 yards on seven carries before leaving the game.

Orlando's departure forced Grove City to use both Roberts, who ran for 48 yards on a half-dozen carries, and Jason Walent (Massillon, OH/Tuslaw) at fullback, along with sophomore Donnie Lewis (Grove City, PA/Grove City).

"We cannot run the ball as well without Mike Orlando," Smith said. "We've always been able to be fully stocked and not have to shuffle guys."

Defensively, strong safety Mike Volchko (Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) intercepted a pair of Tom Naughton passes, including one in the end zone. He also broke up a pair of passes and made nine tackles.

"Those were key plays that really helped the defense," Smith said.

Free safety Josh Sachleben (Ringtown, PA/North Schuylkill) led the Wolverine defense with 11 tackles while Adam Corbett (Warren, OH/Champion) made 10 stops.

Styer drilled a field goal with 2:15 left in the first quarter to cut Waynesburg's lead to 7-3. Rocky Doman and Naughton both had touchdown runs in the first quarter. Doman finished with 79 yards; Magruder had 74.
