Baker earns ECAC Southwest honors

CAPE COD, Mass. -- Grove City College junior cornerback Mike Baker (Harrison City, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) earned Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southwest All-Star recognition Tuesday afternoon from the region's head football coaches.

Baker is one of nine Presidents' Athletic Conference players to be selected to the 25-man squad. It is Baker's first ECAC honor.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Baker emerged as one of the region's top cornerbacks in 2007 as he led the PAC in interceptions (5), pass deflections (11) and total passes defended (16). His 16 passes defended are the most in program history since that statistic's inception in the mid-1990s. Baker also had 58 total tackles, including a team-leading 43 solo stops.

Baker also scored one touchdown this year as he recovered a muffed punt in the end zone on Homecoming against Bethany October 6. He started all 10 games this season and earned First Team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference following the season. Baker also received Third Team All-South Region recognition from D3Football.com.

He is a two-year starter and letterwinner for Grove City, which finished third in the PAC with a 3-3 record this fall.

PAC runner-up Waynesburg placed four players on the ECAC Southwest All-Star Team: halfback Robert Heller, offensive lineman Alex Tempalski, defensive end Mike Czerwien and inside linebacker Brendon Steele. Conference champion Washington & Jefferson placed quarterback Bobby Swallow, wide receiver Tom McCafferty and offensive lineman Matt Houy on the all-star team. Westminster punter Paul Rhodes also earned ECAC honors.
