Wolverine rally falls short at Alfred

ALFRED, NY, November 10, 2001--Trailing 16-3 in the fourth quarter, Grove City College senior SE Todd Gibson (Warren, OH/Champion) hauled in a season-long  41-yard touchdown pass from senior Mike Kashurba (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe), but host Alfred University never bent again in a 16-10 victory over the Wolverines at Merrill Field Saturday afternoon.

Grove City dropped to 2-7 overall, while Alfred improved to 4-5.

Despite being held to 180 total offensive yards, the Wolverines were in position to start a game-winning drive from their own 40-yard line with 3:08 left in the fourth quarter, but Alfred picked off a pass on third-and-five from Grove City's 45 and returned it to the GC 17.

Grove City's defense set up the first score of the game as freshman ILB Mike Choby (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) returned an interception 20 yards to Alfred's 10-yard line.  Grove City failed to find the end zone, however, and settled for a 21-yard field goal by sophomore Mike Titzel (Greenville, PA/Greenville).

Alfred scored twice before halftime to take a 10-3 lead at intermission, first on a 3-yard run by Jesse Raynor and then on a 21-yard field goal by Raynor.

Raynor ended up accounting for all 16 Saxon points, adding a 1-yard TD run with 11:40 left in the third quarter to put the Saxons ahead, 16-3.

Kashurba's TD pass to Gibson came with 10:10 left in the fourth, capping a seven-play, 78-yard drive.

Wolverine senior ILB Adam Corbett (Warren, OH/Champion) became the school's career tackle leader in the first quarter with his third stop of the day -- a touchdown-saving tackle at the 3-yard line off a 39-yard run by Raynor, who scored on the next play.  Corbett finished with nine tackles, giving him 337 in his four-year career.  Scott Fraser set the old career tackle mark of 330 from 1991-1994.

Choby sparked the Wolverine defensive effort all afternoon, recording a team-high 13 tackles, including seven solos and three for loss.  Senior OLB Jonathan Forbes (New Martinsville, WV/Magnolia) was credited with Grove City's lone sack.

Alfred finished with 377 yards of total offense.

Grove City will conclude its season on Friday, Nov. 16, when it hosts the College of Wooster at 12:30 p.m.  The game was postponed Sep. 15 due to the events of Sep. 11.
