Westminster defeats Grove City, 19-7

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Wolverine split end Bo Danton (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) pulled in a career-high four passes for 105 yards but Westminster's potent ground attack carried the Titans to a 19-7 victory over Grove City at Robert E. Thorn Field Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

Titan tailback Scott Froelich ran for 178 yards on a Westminster-record 37 carries and as a team, the Titans (5-2, 3-1 PAC) ran for 209 yards on 52 attempts. 

Meanwhile, Grove City (2-6, 1-4 PAC) moved the ball through the air as quarterbacks Todd Smargiasso (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) and Sam Mowrey (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) combined to complete 10 of 17 attempts for 157 yards. With the Wolverines trailing 13-0 late in the first half, Smargiasso fired a 57-yard touchdown strike to a streaking Danton along the right sideline. Mike Titzel's (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) extra point slashed the lead to 13-7.

Westminster, however, took the opening possession of the second half and drove 91 yards for a touchdown. Froelich's 3-yard run capped the 13-play drive. Overall, Westminster held a 36:35-23:25 edge in time of possession.

The Titans took a 6-0 lead seven minutes into the game when Tom Froelich scooped up a blocked punt and ran it 32 yards for a touchdown.  

Smargiasso, who led Grove City with 27 yards rushing, completed seven of 12 attempts for 104 yards. Mowrey went 3-for-5, gaining 53 yards. Jason DeMeo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) caught three balls for 35 yards.

Mike Choby (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) led Grove City with 13 total tackles while Ben Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) and Ross Trimmer (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) made 10 stops each. Steve Weary (Fredonia, Pa./Reynolds) recorded a sack.
