Wolverines close home schedule with win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Grove City (3-6) held a 12-minute edge in time of possession and limited visiting Alfred to just 178 total yards as the Wolverines pulled out a 12-7 victory over Alfred at Robert E. Thorn Field Saturday afternoon in Grove City's home finale.

The Wolverines took a 12-0 lead into the fourth quarter as Steve Roberts (East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield) scored on a one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and tight end Mark Byrer (Morgantown, W. Va./University) caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Todd Smargiasso (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) six seconds into the second period.

Roberts' touchdown capped a 13-play, 74-yard drive that consumed over seven minutes of clock. Byrer kept the drive alive with a 22-yard reception on third-and-5 while Ken Roudybush (Worthington, Pa./Kittanning) rambled for 10 yards on a third-and-4, giving Grove City a goal to go situation.

Roudybush led Grove City with 59 yards rushing while Smargiasso and Brandon McGlothlin (Freedom, Pa./Freedom) each ran for 48 yards.

Following an exchange of punts, Grove City forced a turnover deep in Alfred territory. Mike Choby (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) forced tailback Cory Raner to fumble at the Saxon 18 and cornerback Gene Iannuzzi (Port Jervis, N.Y./Minisink Valley) recovered at the 21. Four plays later, Smargiasso threw the six-yard touchdown pass to Byrer.

Free safety Ross Trimmer (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) ended two Alfred drives in GCC territory with interceptions. Choby, meanwhile, led the Wolverines with eight tackles and a sack. The Wolverines executed 71 plays and converted 12 of 19 third-down opportunities. Byrer led the Wolverines with three receptions.

The victory was Grove City's fourth consecutive Parents' Day victory.
