Grove City falls to Defiance, 14-9
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Host Grove City jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the opening possession of the game and out-gained Defiance, 340-276, but the Wolverines fell to 1-2 with a 14-9 loss to Defiance in the second all-time meeting between the two teams.
Senior quarterback Sam Mowrey (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) threw for 184 yards on 18-of-35 accuracy and also ran for 57 yards on 14 attempts. Mowrey sparked Grove City's opening drive with a pair of completions to junior split end Dave DiDonato (South Fayette, Pa./South Fayette), an 11-yard strike to senior end Tim Flenner (Perry, Ohio/ Perry) and a 23-yard scramble to the Defiance 1.
Sophomore fullback Ken Roudybush (Worthington, Pa./Kittanning) capped the 13-play, 68-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge.
The Wolverines held a 2-to-1 edge in time of possession in the first half, out-gaining the Yellow Jackets 186-78 over that span.
Defiance knotted the game at 7-7 by taking the opening possession of the third quarter and moving 77 yards in seven plays. Aaron Schmidt's 13-yard touchdown reception from Corey Minnfield put Defiance on the board. Keith Wilson's extra point tied the game at 7-7.
Jason Gendron, who rushed for 100 yards, capped Defiance's next possession with a 14-yard touchdown run, stretching Defiance's lead to 14-7 with 5:05 left in the third quarter.
Grove City slashed the lead to 14-9 in the closing seconds of the third quarter when Gendron dropped a pitchout in the end zone and was hauled down by junior defensive end Dan Bukowski (North East, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) for a safety.
On three different occasions in the fourth quarter, Grove City drove into Defiance territory but turned it over on downs. With 1:05 left in the game, the Yellow Jackets stopped Wolverine fullback Brandon McGlothlin (Freedom, Pa./Freedom) short on 4th-and-2 at the Defiance 35.
DiDonato caught seven passes for 79 yards while Bo Danton (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and Flenner each caught four passes. Danton gained 72 yards while Flenner netted 27.
Mowrey led Grove City with 57 yards rushing while McGlothlin ran for 56. Sophomore free safety Ross Trimmer (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) led Grove City with 10 stops while inside linebacker Ben Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) had eight hits and a sack.
Minnfield completed 11 of 22 passes for 136 yards. Gendron caught three balls for 15 yards. Minnfield caught his own deflected pass for a seven-yard gain at the end of the first half and also punted 15 yards on a quick kick.
Grove City hosts Bethany next Saturday in the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener.
