Waynesburg spoils Grove City's Homecoming
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Visiting Waynesburg (6-1, 3-0 PAC) forced six Grove City turnovers and amassed 472 yards of total offense in picking up a 45-10 victory over the Wolverines on Homecoming Saturday afternoon at Robert E. Thorn Field in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
The loss drops Grove City to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the PAC.
After Waynesburg jumped out to a 14-0 lead 10 minutes into the game, Grove City cut the lead in half as split end Dave DiDonato (South Fayette, Pa./South Fayette) hauled in a 33-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Mowrey (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) on a scissors flea-flicker play. Michael Titzel's (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) extra point made it 14-7.
Following a three-yard touchdown run from Waynesburg's Ryan Abels, Titzel booted a 34-yard field goal with 7:19 left in the first half.
However, the Yellow Jackets took a 28-10 lead by halftime as Paul D'Imperio caught the second of two his touchdown receptions from quarterback Jeff Dumm. D'Imperio opened the scoring with a 63-yard touchdown catch, then added the five-yard score with 3:11 left in the first half.
Waynesburg broke the game open in the second half as Dumm fired a pair of touchdown passes. He finished 17-for-25 for 220 yards and four touchdowns.
Mowrey completed 11 of 23 attempts for 132 yards but was intercepted twice. DiDonato caught five passes while Bo Danton (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and Brandon McGlothlin (Freedom, Pa./Freedom) each caught three passes.
Ivan Hawkins led Waynesburg with five catches while D'Imperio had four receptions. Abels led Waynesburg with 139 yards rushing. Waynesburg ran for 252 yards as a team.
Grove City will visit Westminster next Saturday afternoon in the PAC finale.
