Wolverines upset Kings Point on Senior Day

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior fullback Steve Roberts (East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield) ran for 107 yards and a pair of touchdowns while the Grove City defense forced four turnovers as Grove City (5-5) closed the 2003 season with a 29-14 upset of visiting U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (6-3) Saturday at Robert E. Thorn Field.

It is Grove City's second consecutive victory to close the season and the Wolverines' fifth straight win on Senior Day.

Roberts scored twice while junior split end Dave DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) hauled in a pair of touchdown passes from senior quarterback Sam Mowrey (Titusville, Pa./Titusville). Mowrey established a new single-season record for touchdown passes, finishing the season with 16. That breaks the record of 15, set by Mike Zeigler in 1966 and tied by Tom Miles in 1992.

Defensively, junior Mike Patterson (South Fayette, Pa./South Fayette) helped lead the Wolverine defense with a pair of sacks, a fumble recovery, four tackles for loss and two deflected passes. Junior linebacker Mike Choby (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) added 10 stops, including a sack. Choby also had three tackles for loss, giving him a school record 40 for his career.

Meanwhile, nose tackle Monte Bell (Blairsville, Pa./Blairsville) forced two fumbles while fellow defensive lineman Adam Gaab (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) sealed the win with his first career interception.

The Wolverines took the opening possession and marched 60 yards to the end zone in just nine plays. Roberts had consecutive runs of 14 and 11 yards, giving Grove City goal-to-go. On second down, Mowrey lofted a seven-yard touchdown pass to DiDonato, who ran a corner route. The PAT failed and Grove City led 6-0.

Midway through the second quarter, Grove City doubled its lead after a 7-play, 52-yard drive. Brandon McGlothlin (Freedom, Pa./Freedom) rambled 16 yards while Mowrey then added a 10-yard bootleg on fourth-and-2 down to the Kings Point 10. Roberts then sprinted 10 yards up the middle on a trap for the touchdown. The two-point attempt failed.

Kings Point countered with a 14-play, 86-yard drive that slashed the lead to 12-7. All-American tailback David McNeal raced 37 yards up the middle to put the ball in Grove City territory while split end Peter Belford caught a 20-yard pass from Dan Circelli. Fullback Jamal Locklear bulled in from the 1 with 3:14 left, putting the Mariners on the board.

Kings Point forced a Grove City punt on the Wolverines' next possession. However, a roughing the punter penalty kept the drive going. Following a nine-yard run by Mowrey, Bo Danton (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) caught a 33-yard pass. Mowrey followed that completion with a 22-yard touchdown strike to DiDonato. Michael Titzel's (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) extra point pushed the lead to 19-7 with 44 seconds left in the half.

McNeal cut Grove City's lead back to five with a 15-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter but the Wolverine special teams forced returner Cole Patterson to fumble at the Kings Point 36. Trimmer recovered the loose ball and seven plays later, Roberts scored his seventh touchdown of the year. Titzel added the PAT.

Trimmer ended Kings Point's next drive with an interception, which he returned to the Grove City 43. A pair of 15-yard penalties after the play advanced the ball to the Kings Point 27. Titzel drilled a 21-yard field goal to close the scoring.

Gaab thwarted the Mariners' final drive with an interception at the line of scrimmage.

Grove City held Kings Point to a 3-for-13 performance on third down. The Mariners did outgain Grove City 312-252 but had 11 penalties for 123 yards. McNeal led Kings Point with 144 yards.

Junior Mike Prioletti (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Trimmer both had a team-high 12 tackles.

Seniors who are graduating from the program are Bell, split ends Kurt Bradler (Leroy, Ohio/Riverside) and Tim Flenner (Perry, Ohio/Perry), safety Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock), tackles Jason Kelly (Madison, Ohio/Madison) and Steve Kirk (North Apollo, Pa./Apollo-Ridge), Mowrey, tight end Mike Richards (Brookville, Pa./Brookville), Roberts, cornerback Dan Roseum (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga), safety Dan Solomon (Huron, Ohio/Huron), Titzel and linebacker Jake Tobolewski (Girard, Pa./Girard).
