Rally falls short against Wooster
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team fell to 2-1 with a 28-13 loss to visiting Wooster (2-0) Saturday afternoon at Robert E. Thorn Field in non-conference action.
The Wolverines trailed 21-0 in the first half before pulling to within 21-13 in the third quarter. However, Grove City could pull no closer. The loss snaps Grove City's four-game losing streak dating back to last season.
Wooster took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on Tony Sutton's one-yard touchdown run and a 10-yard touchdown pass from Justin Schafer to Tim Slovensky. The lead grew to 21-0 with 5:37 left in the first half as Wooster defensive end Jamin Huber scooped up a Grove City fumble and ran 30 yards for a touchdown.
The Wolverines slashed the lead to 21-7 late in the first half as junior quarterback Bradford Clark (Letart, W. Va./Wahama) raced into the end zone from the 5. Clark's 42-yard completion to senior split end Bo Danton (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) set up the goal-to-go situation.
Midway through the third quarter, Grove City trimmed the lead to 21-13 on a one-yard plunge by senior fullback Brandon McGlothlin (Freedom, Pa./Freedom). The extra point failed. McGlothlin finished with 56 rushing yards on 16 attempts.
Grove City moved the ball deep into Wooster territory early in the fourth quarter but McGlothlin was stopped on fourth-and-1 at the Scots' 22. Sutton capped the game's scoring later in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 9-yard touchdown run with 4:10 left in the game.
Grove City held Wooster to 248 yards of total offense. Sutton ran for 162 yards on 38 carries. Junior Adam Wargo (West Farmington, Ohio/Champion) led Grove City in rushing, gaining 77 yards on 16 attempts. Senior Greg Verch (Champion, Ohio/Champion) caught two passes for 18 yards.
Junior cornerback Dave Issler (Portersville, Pa./Slippery Rock) and senior linebacker Mike Choby (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) each had 10 tackles while senior cornerback Gene Iannuzzi (Port Jervis, N.Y./Minisink Valley) intercepted a pass.
The Wolverines will visit Muhlenberg next Saturday at 1 p.m.
