Muhlenberg downs Wolverines
ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team fell to 2-2 with a 27-3 loss at Muhlenberg Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Scotty Wood Stadium.
The Mules (3-0) held the Wolverines to just 109 total yards of offense and eight first downs for the game. Muhlenberg held a seven-minute edge in time of possession and averaged 4.9 yards per play.
Muhlenberg took a 6-0 lead with 21 seconds left in the first quarter as fullback Keith Shalvoy scored on a one-yard touchdown run. Junior Ross Trimmer (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) blocked the extra point attempt.
The Wolverines cut the lead in half midway through the second quarter as sophomore Matt Campbell (Canton, Ohio/McKinley) drilled a 28-yard field goal. Grove City gained possession deep in Muhlenberg territory after junior Dave Issler (Portersville, Pa./Slippery Rock) recovered a fumbled punt at the Mules' 17.
Muhlenberg extended its lead to 13-3 with 1:35 left in the half as Nick Rosetti tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to tailback Jason Spencer. The lead grew to 20-3 in the third quarter as Rosetti completed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Chris Poehls.
Shalvoy caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Rosetti with 6:45 left to close the game's scoring. Shalvoy ran for 73 yards on 12 carries. Spencer led Muhlenberg with 153 rushing yards.
Junior quarterback Bradford Clark (Letart, W. Va./Wahama) completed 9 of 14 attempts for 59 yards. Clark was intercepted twice, however. Senior split end Bo Danton (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) caught three passes for 22 yards while junior wingback Adam Wargo (Champion, Ohio/Champion) had three catches for 11 yards.
Sophomore free safety Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) intercepted a pass while sophomore strong safety Clay Piper (Mineral Point, Pa./Central Cambria) recovered a fumble. Senior linebacker Mike Choby (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) led the Wolverines with a season-high 15 tackles and a half sack. Sophomore defensive end Richard Welch (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) had 1.5 sacks.
Grove City opens Presidents' Athletic Conference play next Saturday, October 2, at Bethany.
