Turnovers plague Wolverines
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team fell to 3-6 Saturday afternoon with a 16-0 loss to Alfred (7-1) in non-conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field.
Grove City held the Saxons to just 238 total yards of offense and forced nine Alfred punts. However, Grove City committed six turnovers and gained just 110 yards of offense. The Saxons forced three fumbles and intercepted three passes.
Alfred led 9-0 at halftime as freshman kicker Chris Reynolds booted field goals of 37, 28 and 34 yards. The 34-yard field goal came on the final play of the first half. Late in the first quarter, junior defensive end Steve Weary (Fredonia, Pa./Reynolds) blocked a Reynolds field goal attempt. Sophomore defensive back Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) returned the blocked kick to the Grove City 18.
However, the Wolverines were forced to try a field goal and Matt Campbell's (Canton, Ohio/Canton McKinley) 34-yard field goal sailed wide right.
In the third quarter, Alfred extended its lead to 16-0 as Ron Duliba threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Matt Gibbins, capping a two-play, 15-yard drive. A Brenton Brady interception set up the short drive.
Senior linebacker Mike Choby (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) led Grove City with nine tackles while fellow linebackers Mike Prioletti (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Ben Szelong (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) both had eight stops. Szelong and sophomore defensive end Richard Welch (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) both had sacks.
Freshman quarterback Greg Moore (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) completed nine of 14 passes for 59 yards but was intercepted twice. Senior Brandon McGlothlin (Freedom, Pa./Freedom) caught three passes while Greg Verch (Warren, Ohio/Champion), Dan Jeltes (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills), Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and Dave DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) all had two catches. Verch had a team-high 20 receiving yards.
Duliba finished 13 of 33 for 118 yards. Chaz Bruce caught six passes for 24 yards and also ran for 91 yards on 25 attempts. Grove City held the Saxons to just 3.3 yards per play. Alfred did hold a 10-minute edge in time of possession.
Grove City hosts Westminster next Saturday in the season finale at 1 p.m.
