Westminster nips Grove City in finale, 9-6
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team closed the 2004 season Saturday afternoon with a 9-6 loss to Presidents' Athletic Conference archrival Westminster at Robert E. Thorn Field.
Defensively, Grove City held Westminster to just 3.3 yards per play, forced nine punts and limited Titan quarterbacks to a 4 of 17 performance. However, Westminster kicker Jason Lundmark kicked a 33-yard field goal with 4:46 left in the game to put the Titans on top to stay.
Senior linebacker Mike Choby (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) posted 11 stops to become Grove City's all-time leader with 350 total tackles. Senior inside linebacker Mike Prioletti (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) led Grove City with 13 tackles and a sack, giving him 83 total tackles this season.
Westminster (5-4, 2-2 PAC) took a 6-0 lead with 4:35 left in the third quarter as Scott Froelich scored on a 10-yard touchdown run. Grove City junior Steve Weary (Fredonia, Pa./Reynolds) blocked the extra point, his third blocked kick of the season. That ties Jonathan Forbes' single-season record, set in 2000. A fumble at the Grove City 15 had set up Westminster's lone touchdown.
Grove City (3-7, 1-4) tied the game with 9:01 left in the game as junior quarterback Bradford Clark (Letart, W. Va./Wahama) tossed a five-yard touchdown pass to senior Dave DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) on a fade pattern in the end zone. The extra point missed wide left.
The Wolverines marched 56 yards on 12 plays, using nearly six minutes of clock on the touchdown drive. Clark's 22-yard completion to DiDonato helped ignite the drive while a pass interference penalty against the Titans gave Grove City a goal-to-go situation. Clark finished the day 11 of 26 for 129 yards. DiDonato caught a game-high five passes for 63 yards.
Following Lundmark's field goal, Grove City advanced the ball to the Titan 48 but turned it over on downs. Grove City forced Westminster to punt but Titan punter Dusty Rhodes booted the ball towards the pylon and Westminster downed it at the 2 with 50 seconds left. Grove City moved the ball out to the 42 but Clark's desperation pass on the final play of the game fell incomplete.
Sophomore Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) caught three passes for 35 yards while junior fullback Ken Roudybush (Worthington, Pa./Kittanning) ran for 57 yards on 11 carries. Grove City out-gained Westminster, 246-212. In addition to Prioletti, sophomore defensive tackle Jordan Johnston (Strattanville, Pa./Clarion-Limestone) and Weary each had sacks. Senior Dan Bukowski (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) and junior Steve Bruckner (Washington, Pa./Trinity) combined for a sack.
Froelich finished with 118 yards rushing on 30 attempts while Barley finished just 4 of 14 for 63 yards.
