Grove City falls at Manchester, 24-21
NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. -- The Grove City College football team opened the 2005 season with a 24-21 loss at Manchester Saturday afternoon at Carl W. Burt Stadium.
Manchester quarterback Joe DeCraene fired a 28-yard touchdown pass to Mitch Harnish with 26 seconds left to give the Spartans (1-0) the win.
Grove City (0-1) trailed 17-7 in the third quarter before the Wolverines rallied. Following a Manchester fumble that sophomore middle linebacker Bill Waugh (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) forced and recovered, Grove City assembled a 10-play, 91-yard drive.
Sophomore fullback Matt Weil (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) capped the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run with 7:54 left in the third quarter. Weil ran for a career-high 131 yards on 19 carries. All but five of his yards came in the second half.
As a team, the Wolverines ran for 315 yards. Senior wingback Adam Wargo (Champion, Ohio/Champion) ran for 106 yards on eight carries. Wargo's 10-yard touchdown run with 2:54 left in the third quarter put Grove City up 21-17.
Grove City took a 7-3 lead late in the first quarter on a three-yard touchdown run by senior fullback Ken Roudybush (Worthington, Pa./Kittanning).
Junior defensive end Richard Welch (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) helped lead the Grove City defense with a pair of sacks and eight total tackles while senior strong safety Aaron Margo (Dover, Ohio/Dover) posted a team-high 10 tackles.
Senior quarterback Bradford Clark (Letart, W. Va./Wahama) completed four of 12 passes for 43 yards. Junior split end Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) caught three passes for 38 yards.
DeCraene completed 24 of 36 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns. Manchester out-gained Grove City 377-358.
Grove City will host Carnegie Mellon Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1:30 p.m.
