CMU rallies past Grove City, 20-16

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Visiting Carnegie Mellon (2-0) erased Grove City's early 13-0 lead and pulled out a 20-16 win over the Wolverines in non-conference football action at Robert E. Thorn Field Saturday afternoon.

Carnegie Mellon fullback Travis Sivek put the Tartans ahead 17-16 by scoring on a one-yard touchdown run with 4:45 left. Following a Wolverine fumble, Nate Greenstein added an 18-yard field goal that extended the lead to 20-16 with 2:36 left.

Grove City (0-2) moved into CMU territory but turned the ball over on downs near midfield. The Tartans were then able to run out the clock.

Grove City took a 7-0 lead with 10:14 left in the first quarter as senior quarterback Bradford Clark (Letart, W. Va./Wahama) scored on a six-yard touchdown run. Sophomore kicker Brandon McCall (Pittsburgh, Pa./Duquesne) added the extra point. Clark led Grove City with 54 yards rushing on 11 total attempts.

McCall added a career-long 42-yard field goal with 5:05 left in the first quarter, extending the lead to 10-0. McCall's 28-yard field goal with 4:28 left in the first half put Grove City up 13-0.

CMU cut the lead to 13-3 at the end of the first half on Nate Greenstein's 24-yard field goal. A one-yard touchdown run by Sivek with 6:29 left in the third quarter cut the Grove City lead to 13-10. The Wolverines doubled the lead on McCall's third field goal, a 27-yarder.

Sivek led all rushers with 125 yards on 27 carries. Grove City limited the Tartans to just 2.9 yards per carry. Defensive end Steve Weary (Fredonia, Pa./Reynolds) helped lead the Wolverine defense with three sacks and seven solo tackles. Senior strong safety Aaron Margo (Dover, Ohio/Dover) posted a game-high 10 tackles.

Junior cornerback Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) intercepted a pass while junior defensive end Richard Welch (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) recovered a fumble. Clark completed 5 of 11 pass attempts for 89 yards. Junior split end Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) caught three passes for 76 yards.

Kevin Mulkern completed five of 10 attempts for 88 yards for CMU.

Grove City will open up Presidents' Athletic Conference action next Saturday at Thomas More. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.
