Thiel tops Grove City
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel retained possession of the Mercer County Cup Saturday afternoon with a 30-0 victory over Grove City in Presidents' Athletic Conference football action at Alumni Stadium. The Wolverines are now 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the PAC.
Thiel halfback Steve Minton ran for 152 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the Tomcats. Thiel (5-0, 3-0) entered the game ranked 17th nationally in this week's D3Football.com national poll.
Following a scoreless first quarter, Minton gave Thiel a 6-0 lead with 13:50 left in the first half on a 7-yard touchdown run. Grove City defensive end Steve Weary (Fredonia, Pa./Reynolds) blocked the extra point, his sixth career blocked kick. That extends his own Grove City career record.
Sammy Koyl's 34-yard field goal extended Thiel's lead to 9-0 while Brandon Chambers caught a 62-yard touchdown pass from Darrell Satterfield with 3:33 left in the half to extend Thiel's lead to 16-0. Grove City drove to midfield on its final possession of the first half but senior quarterback Bradford Clark (Letart, W. Va./Wahama) was intercepted by Thiel defensive end Chris Lorber.
Grove City had three drives stall in Thiel territory while two other drives ended near midfield. Clark finished 10 of 19 for 101 yards. Junior split end Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) caught eight passes for 93 yards.
Thiel held Grove City to 28 yards rushing on 25 attempts. Sophomore fullback Wes Basham (Nokesville, Va./Brentsville) had 19 yards on four attempts.
Defensively, senior free safety Ross Trimmer (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) intercepted two passes and added nine tackles. Senior strong safety Aaron Margo (Dover, Ohio/Dover) had a team-high 11 total tackles.
Minton added touchdown runs in both the third and fourth quarters. Satterfield finished 18 of 28 for 212 yards and was not sacked.
The Wolverines own a 14-8 edge in the Mercer County Cup series. Grove City will host Washington and Jefferson next Saturday at Robert E. Thorn Field. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.
