Wolverines fall to Presidents
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Visiting Washington and Jefferson (6-1, 2-1) scored 23 second-half points Saturday as the Presidents earned a 37-14 win over Grove City in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field.
Grove City (2-5, 1-3 PAC) took a 14-7 lead in the first half before the Presidents came back. Senior quarterback Bradford Clark (Letart, W. Va./Wahama) scored on a two-yard touchdown run with 1:57 left to tie the game at 7-7.
Grove City then took a 14-7 lead with 11:34 left in the first half as junior strong safety Clay Piper (Mineral Point, Pa./Central Cambria) intercepted a Chris Edwards pass at the Grove City 4 and returned it 96 yards for a touchdown. It is Piper's first career interception.
However, the Presidents tied the game with 59 second left in the half on R.J. Zitzelsberger's two-yard touchdown run.
In the second half, Edwards threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Tom McCafferty with 4:50 left in the third quarter to put Washington and Jefferson up 21-14. Edwards finished the afternoon 36 of 44 for 335 yards and two touchdowns. The lead grew to 28-14 as backup quarterback Ryan Church scored on a four-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Kyle Sidebotham's 31-yard field goal with 7:38 left stretched the lead to 31-14. Zitzelsberger caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Edwards with 3:35 left to cap the scoring.
Senior Aaron Krepps opened the scoring by returning a punt 55 yards for a touchdown 1:16 into the game.
Clark completed five of 14 passes for 38 yards. He threw two interceptions. Freshman Stephen Mercer (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) completed six of 11 attempts for 61 yards. Junior split end Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) caught five passes for 48 yards. He also completed a 12-yard completion to junior tight end Dan Jeltes (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) on an end around pass.
Sophomore wingback Ian Tobin (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) led Grove City with 53 yards on eight carries.
Junior linebacker Garret Choby (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) led Grove City with 11 tackles while senior nose tackle Adam Gaab (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) added 10 stops.
The Presidents held a 37:48-22:12 edge in time of possession and out-gained Grove City, 458-282.
Grove City will close the home portion of the regular season next Saturday against Waynesburg at 1:30. It is Senior Day for Grove City's 14 seniors.
