Alfred tops Grove City
ALFRED, N.Y. -- Host Alfred (7-1) limited Grove City to just 33 rushing yards Saturday as the Saxons earned a 27-7 win over Grove City at Merrill Field in non-conference football action. It is Alfred's seventh straight win.
Grove City (3-6) fell behind 13-0 in the first half but pulled to within 13-7 with 2:19 left on a two-yard touchdown run by senior fullback Ken Roudybush (Worthington, Pa./Kittanning). It is Roudybush's fifth touchdown of the season. The score capped a 10-play, 65-yard drive.
However, Alfred pulled away in the second half. Following an interception at the Grove City 17, Alfred's Brenton Brady extended the lead to 19-7 with a one-yard touchdown run with 4:56 left in the third quarter. The Saxon lead swelled to 25-7 with 13:24 left as Paul Keeley threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Craig Zarzycki.
Alfred closed the scoring with 2:59 left as Andy Rantz sacked Grove City quarterback Bradford Clark (Letart, W. Va./Wahama) in the end zone for a safety. The Saxons had the ball for 22:30 in the second half.
Clark completed seven of 14 passes for 87 yards while freshman Stephen Mercer (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) completed four of 10 passes for 45 yards. Junior split end Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) caught seven passes for 91 yards.
Keeley threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns on 24 of 38 accuracy. Sophomore linebacker Bill Waugh (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) and sophomore cornerback Shane Coughlin (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) each had interceptions. Waugh added 11 tackles while Coughlin had nine stops and a forced fumble. Coughlin and senior defensive end Steve Weary (Fredonia, Pa./Reynolds) both blocked extra points.
For Weary, it is his sixth blocked kick of the season and the ninth of his career. Both are College records. As a team, Grove City has eight total blocked kicks this year.
