Westminster nips Grove City, 14-13
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Host Westminster pulled out a last-second 14-13 victory over Grove City in Presidents' Athletic Conference football action Saturday afternoon at Harold Burry Stadium.
Westminster quarterback Brett Myers threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Brett Ziegler with 16 seconds left to tie the game at 13-13. Chris Castillo's extra point put Westminster ahead, capping a 14-play, 80-yard drive.
Grove City moved the ball to the Westminster 42 on its final possession but senior quarterback Bradford Clark's (Letart, W. Va./Wahama) pass into the end zone fell incomplete.
Ziegler caught a 43-yard touchdown pass with 13:31 left in the first half, giving Westminster a 7-0 lead. The Wolverines (3-7, 2-4 PAC) countered though as Clark fired a 47-yard touchdown pass to junior split end Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) on Grove City's subsequent possession.
The Wolverines then pulled ahead in the third quarter as senior free safety Ross Trimmer (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) scooped up Sean Buggey's fumble and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown. It is Trimmer's third career touchdown return. He returned a kickoff and an interception for touchdowns in 2004.
The extra point failed, though, and Grove City led by only six, 13-7.
Grove City held the Titans to just 102 rushing yards on 40 attempts, an average of 2.5 yards per carry. Senior cornerback Dave Issler (Portersville, Pa./Slippery Rock) and sophomore cornerback Shane Coughlin (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) each intercepted passes.
Senior strong safety Aaron Margo (Dover, Ohio/Dover) led Grove City with 10 tackles while sophomore linebacker Bill Waugh (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) had nine stops and a sack. Senior defensive end Steve Weary (Fredonia, Pa./Reynolds) had 1.5 sacks, giving him a team-leading six sacks.
Clark finished 3-of-7 passing for 55 yards. Fichter caught two passes for 52 yards. The Wolverines converted just one of 13 third-down situations.
