Thomas More nips Grove City, 21-20
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Thomas More quarterback Trevor Stellman fired a 16-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Chase Weber with 2:21 left, helping the Saints earn a 21-20 victory over Grove City Saturday afternoon at Robert E. Thorn Field in both teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference opener.
Grove City (0-2, 0-1 PAC) fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter but rallied to eventually take a 20-14 lead with 12:22 left. Sophomore Stephen Mercer (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) with 5:19 left in the first quarter, cutting the Saints' lead to 14-6. The conversion failed.
Grove City then tied the game with 10:13 left in the first half as Mercer scored on a six-yard run. Mercer then fired a game-tying two-point conversion to senior tight end Dan Jeltes (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills).
Senior cornerback Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) set up Grove City's game-tying drive by returning an interception 58 yards to the Thomas More 16.
The Wolverines then took the lead in the fourth quarter as DiDonato scored on a six-yard touchdown run. That capped a 13-play, 70-yard drive. However, Thomas More blocked the pivotal extra point.
Thomas More took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter as Lawrence Colbert raced 50 yards on a draw play. Grove City junior Justin Fowler (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) blocked the extra point, however. The Saints extended the lead to 14-0 at 8:06 of the first period as Stellman fired a 49-yard touchdown pass to Nick Dew.
DiDonato completed 15 of 24 attempts for 188 yards. Mercer caught five passes for 71 yards. He also completed one pass for nine yards and rushed for 13 yards on four attempts. Junior halfback Ian Tobin (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) caught four passes while junior Jay Yanak (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and senior Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) each had three catches.
Junior tailback Matt Weil (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) ran for 56 yards on 21 attempts.
Junior linebacker Bill Waugh (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) led Grove City with seven tackles and a sack. Sophomore strong safety Shane Coughlin (Medford Lakes, N.J./Medford Lakes) also had seven stops while Fowler forced a fumble.
Stellman completed 12 of 21 attempts for 183 yards. Weber had seven catches for 98 yards. Colbert ran for 89 yards on 12 carries.
Grove City will visit Waynesburg next Saturday afternoon at 1:30 in a PAC clash.
