Waynesburg downs Wolverines

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Host Waynesburg (1-3, 1-0 PAC) rallied from an early 6-0 deficit and secured a 29-18 win over Grove City in a Presidents' Athletic Conference football game at John F. Wiley Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Grove City accumulated 373 total yards and 21 first downs on the afternoon. Junior tailback Matt Weil (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) ran for 120 yards on 18 carries while freshman quarterback Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) completed 15 of 35 passes for 173 yards. He threw one touchdown and one interception.

Grove City (0-3, 0-2) jumped out to a 6-0 lead with 23 seconds left in the first quarter as freshman halfback Matt Weaver (Waite Hill, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) scored on a 15-yard touchdown run. Weaver ran for 56 yards on five carries and also caught four passes for 45 yards. The extra point failed, however.

A two-yard touchdown run by Eric Daniels in the second quarter gave Waynesburg a 7-6 lead. Waynesburg carried that lead into the third quarter when Daniels added an 18-yard touchdown run that stretched the lead to 14-6.

Waynesburg's lead to grew to 20-6 with 1:31 left in the third quarter on a five-yard run by Ryan Abels. Grove City junior Justin Fowler (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) blocked the extra point. It is his fourth blocked kick this year. Fowler led the Wolverines with nine total tackles.

The Wolverines pulled to within 20-12 with 5:49 left as Weil scored on a three-yard touchdown run. Waynesburg blocked the extra point, though, and Yellow Jacket cornerback Anthony Taylor received a lateral and returned the block for a defensive two-point conversion. It is the first defensive two-pointer ever scored against Grove City.

On the first play after the subsequent kickoff, Abels ran 56 yards for a touchdown, sealing the win.

Grove City capped the scoring with 2:12 left as DiDonato tossed a nine-yard touchdown pass to junior split end Jay Yanak (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) in the back of the end zone. The two-point attempt failed.

Yanak caught four passes for 33 yards. Senior Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) led Grove City with five catches for 63 yards.

Senior cornerback Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) intercepted a pass while junior linebacker Bill Waugh (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) recovered a fumble and made seven tackles.

Abels led Waynesburg with 122 yards rushing while Daniels added 88. Grove City ran for 200 yards as a team.

The Wolverines will host Westminster next Saturday, September 30 at 1:30 p.m.
