Tomcats blank Grove City
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Visiting Thiel College earned a 20-0 victory over Grove City in Presidents' Athletic Conference football action Saturday afternoon on Homecoming at Robert E. Thorn Field. Thiel (4-3, 3-1 PAC) retains possession of the Mercer County Cup with the win.
Thiel took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter on a 7-yard touchdown run by Dan Hess. Thiel maintained its 7-0 lead into the third quarter. Hess then extended the lead to 14-0 with a one-yard touchdown plunge at the 10:15 mark. Hess' two-yard touchdown run with 9:30 left in the game then sealed the victory. Hess ran for 113 yards on 32 carries.
Thiel limited Grove City (1-5, 1-4 PAC) to minus-4 yards rushing and 119 total yards. Freshman quarterback Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) completed 12 of 26 passes for 123 yards for Grove City. Junior split end Jay Yanak (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) caught five passes for 63 yards while freshman Matt Weaver (Waite Hill, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) added three receptions for 26 yards.
Defensively, junior weakside linebacker Bill Waugh (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) led Grove City with 17 total tackles, including 12 solo stops. Waugh also had two quarterback sacks. Junior defensive tackle Justin Fowler (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) had seven total tackles, including three for loss. He also blocked an extra point. It is Fowler's sixth blocked kick of the season.
Sophomore cornerback Mike Baker (Harrison City, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) intercepted a pass for the Wolverines. It is Baker's first career interception.
Thiel owned a 20-minute edge in time of possession. Thiel quarterback Billy Blankenship completed 16 of 27 attempts for 163 yards.
Grove City now leads the Mercer County Cup series 14-9. The Wolverines will visit Washington & Jefferson next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
