Wolverines fall at W&J
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Host Washington & Jefferson scored 35 first-half points on its way to a 52-18 home victory over Grove City (1-6, 1-5 PAC) in Presidents' Athletic Conference football action at Cameron Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Grove City accumulated 255 yards of offense in the first half. However, the Wolverines executed just 15 offensive plays in the second half. Grove City also had the ball for just 9:44 in the second half.
Freshman quarterback Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) threw for a career-high 193 yards on 17 of 24 passing. DiDonato's six-yard touchdown run with 4:25 left in the first quarter cut W&J's lead to 7-6. The score capped a 9-play, 92-yard drive. DiDonato fired a 31-yard pass to junior wingback Ian Tobin (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) to help set up the touchdown.
Tobin finished with three catches for 47 yards. Freshman wingback Matt Weaver (Waite Hill, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) caught a team-high six passes for 39 yards while senior split end Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) pulled in five passes for 84 yards.
W&J extended its lead to 14-6 moments later on the second of five Ryan Mendel touchdown runs. Again, the Wolverines answered quickly, this time with a 5-play, 80-yard drive. Weaver caught a 23-yard flea-flicker while Fichter punctuated the drive with a 24-yard touchdown catch from DiDonato.
Junior tailback Matt Weil (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) cut W&J's lead to 28-18 with 1:16 left in the first half with a two-yard touchdown run. The two-point attempt failed.
W&J (6-1, 3-0 PAC) took control of the game on the final play of the first half, however, as Bobby Swallow fired a 27-yard touchdown pass to Bubba Heisler. The Presidents led 35-18 at the half and added 17 unanswered points in the second half.
Mendel ran for 130 yards on 24 carries. The Presidents owned a 483-272 edge in total offense. Swallow completed 12 of 17 passes for 200 yards.
Sophomore strong safety Shane Coughlin (Medford Lakes, N.J./Medford Lakes) posted 14 tackles while junior weakside linebacker Bill Waugh (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) had 10 stops and a sack. Senior cornerback Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) intercepted a pass while sophomore safety Zach Fulmer (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) also had a sack.
Weil led Grove City with 33 yards rushing on eight attempts.
Four of W&J's touchdown drives started in Grove City territory. The Presidents have now won six straight games.
Grove City will host Rochester next Saturday in non-conference action at Thorn Field at 1:30 p.m.
