Rochester tops Grove City, 38-21
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Visiting Rochester (6-2) jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead and held on for a 38-21 victory over host Grove City in non-conference football action Saturday afternoon at rainy and windy Robert E. Thorn Field.
Grove City freshman quarterback Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) set new program records for completions (27) and attempts (47). DiDonato threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns. The 268-yard effort is the sixth-highest passing total in Grove City history.
Senior split end Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) caught six passes for 83 yards, including a pair of touchdowns. Sophomore Stephen Mercer (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) also hauled in six passes for 47 yards.
Rochester took a 3-0 lead with 9:05 left in the first quarter on Griffin Moar's 33-yard field goal. The Yellowjackets extended the lead to 10-0 in the second quarter on Aaron Molisani's 15-yard touchdown pass to Jay Jay Vanderstyne. Matt Bielecki's four-yard touchdown run with 1:13 left in the half gave Rochester a 17-0 lead at the half.
Following a 36-minute delay in the third quarter due to lightning, Fichter hauled in a 33-yard touchdown pass from DiDonato with 4:53 left in the period. The conversion failed. Rochester countered quickly, though, as Bielecki capped a six-play, 32-yard drive with a one-yard run that extended the lead to 24-6.
The Wolverines closed to within 24-14 early in the fourth quarter as junior wingback Ian Tobin (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from DiDonato. Fichter then tossed a two-point pass to senior tight end Dan Jeltes (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills).
However, Rochester sealed the win as Pat O'Brien scored on a 12-yard touchdown run and Molisani threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Pedro Sosa. Fichter closed the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown reception with two seconds left.
Junior tailback Matt Weil (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) caught four passes for 54 yards for the Wolverines (1-7) while Tobin caught three passes for 25 yards. Junior linebacker Bill Waugh (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) led the Wolverine defense with 12 tackles while sophomore strong safety Shane Coughlin (Medford Lakes, N.J./Medford Lakes) had 11 stops.
Former Wolverine standout T.J. Rockwell held Grove City's previous single-game completion and attempt records. Rockwell completed 25 of 41 attempts against Carnegie Mellon in 1995.
Molisani did not start due to a disciplinary measure but completed 17 of 23 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns. Vanderstyne caught 11 passes for 138 yards. Bielecki ran 29 times for 144 yards.
Grove City will host Case Western Reserve next Saturday, November 4 at 1 p.m.
