Grove City tops Merchant Marine, 14-6
KINGS POINT, N.Y. -- Grove City stopped Kings Point halfback Cameron Amigo on third-and-goal from the 1 on the final play of the game, vaulting the Wolverines to a 14-6 win over Kings Point at Brooks Stadium Saturday afternoon in non-conference football action. It is Grove City's second straight victory to close the 2006 season.
Kings Point (3-7) drove 78 yards to the Grove City 1. With 13 seconds left, Amigo slammed into the pile but was held out of the end zone by the interior of the Grove City defense. Out of time-outs, the Mariners could not execute another play.
In addition to holding Kings Point to just two field goals, the Wolverine defense also scored Saturday as senior free safety Clay Piper (Mineral Point, Pa./Central Cambria) returned a second-quarter interception 95 yards for a touchdown. Piper's return gave Grove City a 14-3 halftime lead.
Senior cornerback Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison), sophomore linebacker Ian Minster (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and sophomore cornerback Mike Baker (Harrison City, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) also had interceptions. Schwamberger's pick came in the end zone, snuffing out a Kings Point scoring opportunity. Baker's interception came at the Grove City 20.
Grove City (3-7) jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 10:21 left in the first quarter as senior split end Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) caught a five-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette). That capped a game-opening 11-play, 84-yard drive.
DiDionato finished the game 10 of 21 for 111 yards. He also ran for 54 yards. Junior tailback Matt Weil (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) led Grove City with 79 yards rushing on 16 attempts. Senior Seth Fox (Ford City, Pa./Ford City) had a team-high three receptions for 18 yards.

Waugh also broke up three passes while Minster had a sack. Freshman Tony Clark (Stow, Ohio/Stow) and senior defensive end Richard Welch (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) each had sacks, also.
Kings Point executed 96 plays and gained 485 total yards. The Mariners also picked up 30 first downs. Quarterback Chuck Kleinschnitz completed 32 of 55 attempts for 295 yards. Amigo ran for 105 yards on 22 carries.
