Dickinson edges Grove City, 17-13

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Visiting Dickinson scored twice in a span of 1 minute, 18 seconds during the third quarter and held on for a 17-13 victory over Grove City in non-conference football action at Robert E. Thorn Field Saturday afternoon.

Grove City (0-1) led 7-3 at halftime and extended the lead to 13-3 on the first possession of the third quarter. Senior tailback Matt Weil (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) bulled in from the 1, capping a 17-play, 68-yard drive that used 6:37. However, Dickinson blocked the extra point.

Dickinson countered with a 9-play, 61-yard drive that ended with Tim Wells' three-yard touchdown run. Grove City went three-and-out on its subsequent possession and on fourth down, Dickinson blocked a Wolverine punt. Dickinson recovered at the Grove City 22 and on the next play, Wells raced 22 yards for a touchdown.

Grove City took its 7-3 lead in the first quarter as sophomore quarterback Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) fired a 61-yard touchdown strike to junior split end Stephen Mercer (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local). DiDonato completed 24 of 45 passes for 252 yards. The 252 yards are the ninth-highest single-game passing performance in Grove City history.

Mercer caught five passes for 109 yards. Senior Ian Tobin (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) hauled in nine passes for 42 yards while senior split end Jay Yanak (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) caught six passes for 60 yards. Weil led Grove City on the ground with 88 yards on 19 attempts.

Grove City drove to the Dickinson 17 in the final two minutes but the Wolverines turned the ball over on downs with 1:33 left. Dickinson (1-0) then managed to run out the clock.

Grove City drove 80 yards on that final possession, which started at the Grove City 3. A 22-yard run by Weil put Grove City in Dickinson territory. Later in the drive, DiDonato fired a 16-yard completion to freshman Zach Summy (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) on fourth-and-6.

Grove City out-gained Dickinson, 314-289. Both teams had 17 first downs.

Senior linebacker Bill Waugh (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) and junior linebacker Adam Eichler (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) both had nine tackles for the Wolverines. Senior nose tackle Justin Fowler (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) recorded a sack and also batted down two passes.

For Dickinson, quarterback Ian Mitchell completed 17 of 25 passes for 172 yards. Chris McInerney caught nine balls for 102 yards. Wells ran for 52 yards.

Grove City will visit Carnegie Mellon next Saturday at 1 p.m.
