Wolverines rally past Thomas More, 23-16

FORT MITCHELL, Ky. -- Senior tailback Matt Weil (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) ran for 116 yards and a pair of touchdowns while junior cornerback Mike Baker (Harrison City, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) intercepted two passes in the end zone, helping Grove City pull out a come-from-behind 23-16 victory over host Thomas More in Presidents' Athletic Conference football action at Beechwood High School. Grove City is now 1-0 in the PAC and has sole possession of first place.

Weil's second touchdown of the day -- a seven-yard scoring run -- gave Grove City a 21-16 lead with 4:35 left. The touchdown capped a three-play, 65-yard drive that required just 38 seconds. On the first play of the possession, sophomore quarterback Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) scrambled 41 yards to the Thomas More 24. Weil picked up 17 yards on the second play of the drive, then scored on the next play.

Grove City stretched the lead to seven as sophomore tight end Chris Rich (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) caught a two-point pass from senior split end Jay Yanak (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair).

DiDonato completed 14 of 23 passes for 100 yards. He also ran for a career-high 90 yards. Senior Ian Tobin (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) caught 13 passes for 80 yards. The 13 pass receptions ties Grove City's single-game record. Tobin also tied that mark September 8 against Carnegie Mellon.

Thomas More drove to the Grove City 7 on its final possession of the game but on third-and-5, Baker intercepted a Josh Gauger pass in the back of the end zone with 1:22 left. Baker also thwarted a Thomas More scoring opportunity in the second quarter by intercepting Gauger in the end zone.

Thomas More (1-1, 0-1 PAC) scored on its first possession of the game as Gauger threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Carpenter. Grove City answered later in the first quarter with an 8-play, 49-yard touchdown drive. Weil bulled in from the 2, cutting the Saints' lead to 7-6. The extra point failed.

Grove City pulled ahead, 12-7, with 3:04 left in the first half as DiDonato scored on a five-yard quarterback keeper. Thomas More's Brandon Kohrs intercepted the two-point attempt, however, and returned it for a defensive two-point conversion.

Grove City pushed the lead to 15-9 late in the third quarter as freshman Chris Haley (Butler, Pa./Butler) drilled a 32-yard field goal. It is Haley's first career field goal. Thomas More reclaimed the lead with 7:07 left in the game as Gauger threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Nick Dew. Gauger completed 21 of 39 passes for 211 yards. Cordario Collier ran for 170 yards on 35 carries for the Saints.

Thomas More outgained Grove City, 403-334. Grove City ran for a season-high 234 yards on 45 carries, an average of 5.2 yards per rush.

Junior linebacker Adam Eichler (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) led Grove City with a career-high 15 tackles while senior defensive end Ross McCracken (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) added a dozen stops.

It is Grove City's first-ever victory over Thomas More. Grove City will host Waynesburg next Saturday night, September 22, at 7 p.m. It is the first-ever night home game for Grove City at Robert E. Thorn Field.
