Grove City falls at Westminster, 14-7

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team fell to 1-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon as host Westminster pulled out a 14-7 victory over Grove City in PAC action at Memorial Field.

Westminster took a 14-7 lead with 30 seconds left in the first half as Jason Discello caught a six-yard touchdown pass. Grove City drove into Westminster territory on each of its four second-half drives but could not break through.

Grove City tied the game at 7-7 with 10:39 left in the first half on a one-yard touchdown run from senior tailback Matt Weil (Fombell, Pa./Riverside). Westminster had taken a 7-0 lead with 4:46 left in the first quarter on Jacob Shaffer's one-yard touchdown run.

In the third quarter, Grove City assembled a 19-play, 69-yard drive but turned the ball over on downs after being stopped on fourth-and-1 at the 11. Grove City also turned the ball over on downs on its final possession as the Wolverines could not convert a fourth-and-11 at the Titan 41.

Grove City quarterback Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) ran for 75 yards on 17 carries and also threw for 135 yards on 19-of-36 accuracy. Senior split end Jay Yanak (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) hauled in seven passes for 68 yards while senior wingback Ian Tobin (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) added five catches for 16 yards. Junior Stephen Mercer (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) caught four passes for 22 yards.

Junior safety Zach Fulmer (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) led Grove City with 10 tackles while junior middle linebacker Adam Eichler (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) added nine stops. Junior linebacker Ian Minster (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) and freshman safety Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) combined for a sack.

Grove City (1-4) converted nine of 19 third-down opportunities. Each team had 17 first downs. Nick McKolosky led Westminster with 108 rushing yards on 26 attempts. Westminster quarterback Kevin Franz completed 19 of 26 passes for 188 yards.

Grove City will host Bethany next Saturday, October 6 in the annual Homecoming game. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
