Dickinson tops Grove City in opener
CARLISLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team opened the 2008 season Saturday afternoon with a 34-7 setback against host Dickinson College at rain-soaked Biddle Field.
Twice in the first half, Grove City took possession inside the Dickinson 30-yard line after forcing turnovers. Grove City recovered a fumble at the Red Devil 28 with 12:35 left in the first quarter but could not convert the turnover into points. Later in the half, junior safety Vance Keirsey (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) returned an interception 44 yards to the Dickinson 4. Grove City again came up empty, however.
The Wolverines broke through with 4:44 left as senior wide receiver Stephen Mercer (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette). Mercer caught five passes for 58 yards while DiDonato completed 16 of 29 attempts for 167 yards. DiDonato also led Grove City with 37 yards rushing.
Junior tight end Chris Rich (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) caught three passes for 45 yards.
Sophomore defensive end Kevin Twarek (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) recorded nine tackles, a forced fumble and a sack for Grove City. Senior linebacker Adam Eichler (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) tallied a game-high 10 stops. Keirsey also broke up two other passes. Sophomore safety Butch Kriger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) deflected a punt.
Dickinson quarterback Ian Mitchell completed six of 10 passes for 110 yards. He also ran for 51 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that put the Red Devils up 7-0. Greg Lord ran for 119 yards and three touchdowns for Dickinson.
Dickinson out-gained Grove City, 350-217.
Grove City will host Carnegie Mellon next Saturday, September 13 at 1:30 p.m. at Robert E. Thorn Field.
