W&J tops Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team dropped to 1-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday night with a 28-10 setback against visiting Washington & Jefferson (4-0, 2-0 PAC) in the third night college football game at Robert E. Thorn Field.

Grove City jumped out to a 7-0 lead just two minutes into the game as senior quarterback Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) scored on a 15-yard touchdown run to cap a game-opening 70-yard drive.

W&J tied the game at the 4:53 mark of the first quarter on Gino Rometo's 60-yard pass to Craig Besong. The Presidents then took a 14-7 lead on the first play of the second quarter as quarterback Steven Shumaker scored on a two-yard touchdown run.

W&J running back Brian Baldrige extended the lead to 21-7 at the 5:08 mark of the second quarter on a one-yard touchdown run. However, Grove City slashed the lead to 21-10 late in the first half on a 27-yard field goal by junior kicker Craig Bicehouse (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock).

The Presidents closed the scoring with 9:20 left in the third quarter on Terrence McAllister's 10-yard touchdown run.

DiDonato completed 28 of 54 pass attempts for 236 yards. Junior wide receiver Luke O'Hara (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) caught eight passes for 65 yards while classmate Zach Summy (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) pulled in six passes for 38 yards. W&J limited Grove City to minus-4 rushing yards. The Wolverines also had five turnovers.

Shumaker threw for 134 yards on 11-of-15 accuracy. He also ran for a team-high 56 yards. Rometo threw for 120 yards on 8-for-16 efficiency. Besong caught nine passes for 140 yards. W&J out-gained Grove City 432-232. The Presidents also owned a 12-minute edge in time of possession.

Sophomore linebacker Tim Irwin (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) intercepted a W&J pass at the goal line and returned it 24 yards in the first quarter.

Sophomore linebacker Jason Ferguson (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) racked up 13 tackles and a sack. He had 10 solo stops. Senior safety Vance Keirsey (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) added nine tackles. Sophomore defensive end Zack Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) recorded a sack and batted down a pass.

Washington & Jefferson entered the game ranked eighth in the country, according to the D3Football.com poll.

Grove City (1-3) will host Saint Vincent next Saturday at 2 p.m. in the annual Homecoming game.
