Grove City tops Bearcats 41-20 to give Smith No. 100

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team improved to 2-3 Saturday afternoon by earning a 41-20 victory over visiting Saint Vincent on Homecoming at Robert E. Thorn Field. The win is the 100th as head coach for Grove City head coach Chris Smith.

Defensively, Grove City limited Saint Vincent (0-5) to just 27 yards rushing and 12 first downs for the game. Grove City also recorded four sacks and forced a pair of fumbles.

Meanwhile, senior quarterback Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) became the College's all-time leader in total offense. DiDonato threw for 226 yards and also ran for 25 yards, giving him 7,562 career yards of total offense. He surpassed the mark of 7,353, set by R.J. Bowers from 1997 to 2000.

However, Grove City's special teams broke a scoreless tie with 2:28 left in the first quarter as sophomore punter Ed Reith (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) raced 45 yards around left end on a fake punt. Junior kicker Craig Bicehouse (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) added the extra point to give Grove City a 7-0 lead.

Grove City extended its lead to 14-0 with 1:05 left in the first half as DiDonato fired a 20-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Will McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark).

In the third quarter, the Wolverines capped an 11-play, 75-yard drive when DiDonato tossed a seven-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wingback Clayton Hall (North Canton, Ohio/Jackson). Grove City then pushed the lead to 28-0 on the first play of the fourth quarter as DiDonato bootlegged 10 yards into the end zone.

Sophomore tailback Blaine Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Donegal) added a three-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter while Reith ran for an eight-yard touchdown with 2:22 left to cap the Wolverine scoring.

Saint Vincent quarterback Kevin Corona threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Daney and a 32-yard strike to Sheldon Loughner in the fourth quarter. Reserve quarterback Jake Smith added a 51-yard touchdown pass to Christian Sutton with 55 seconds left in the game.

Grove City amassed 418 yards of total offense and 23 first downs in the win. Miller ran for 74 of Grove City's 186 rushing yards while Reith added 52.

DiDonato completed 28 of 36 passes. Ten different receivers caught passes for Grove City, including six by Miller for 36 yards. Junior Luke O'Hara (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) hauled in six passes for 41 yards while McCoy gained 59 yards on his five receptions.

Grove City converted seven of 14 third-down opportunities and owned a 13-minute edge in time of possession.

Defensively, sophomore linebacker Vince Angelo (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell), sophomore linebacker Jason Ferguson (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge), sophomore nose tackle Jarred Frawley (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and sophomore end George Matthews (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes) all had sacks.

Angelo and Ferguson both forced fumbles while sophomore linebacker Tim Irwin (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and sophomore end Zack Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) each recovered fumbles.

Ferguson and senior tackle Tony Clark (Stow, Ohio/Stow) both had seven tackles. Clark had 2.5 tackles for loss. Grove City limited Saint Vincent to a 3-for-13 effort on third downs.

Corona completed 12 of 26 passes for 141 yards. Saint Vincent finished with 225 yards of offense. Defensively, Rob James intercepted two passes.

Saint Vincent is a member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference. However, Saturday's game does not count in the PAC standings due to the Bearcats' provisional status in NCAA Division III.

Grove City will visit Geneva next Saturday at 4 p.m.
