Geneva tops Grove City

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team fell to 2-4 overall Saturday evening with a 34-17 setback against host Geneva in a matchup of Presidents' Athletic Conference foes at Reeves Field.

Grove City jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter but Geneva (4-1) took control of the game with 20 unanswered points in the second half.

Grove City took a 7-0 lead with 9:57 remaining in the first quarter as senior quarterback Andrew DiDonato (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) fired a 33-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Luke O'Hara (New Castle, Pa./Shenango). The touchdown came two plays after a shanked punt gave Grove City possession at the Geneva 45.

The Wolverines doubled the lead with 2:17 left as DiDonato tossed a five-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tailback Blaine Miller (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal). That capped a seven-play, 69-yard drive.

DiDonato finished 20 of 35 passing for 200 yards. O'Hara caught six passes for 89 yards while Miller had five catches for 31 yards. Miller also ran for 40 yards on 10 attempts. Sophomore wide receiver Will McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) pulled in five passes for 51 yards

Geneva cut Grove City's lead to 14-7 with 10:09 left in the half on an eight-yard run by Matt Barge. Later in the period, Geneva tied the game on Matt Dean's one-yard plunge into the end zone.

However, Grove City reclaimed the lead on the final play of the first half as junior kicker Craig Bicehouse (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) kicked a 37-yard field goal. On the previous play, Bicehouse missed a 42-yard attempt but Geneva jumped offside, giving Bicehouse a second opportunity.

Geneva took its first lead of the game at the 9:26 mark of the third quarter on Gerard Muschette's four-yard touchdown run.

Early in the fourth quarter, Grove City drove to the Geneva 9. The drive stalled though, and Geneva blocked a 34-yard field goal attempt. Geneva's Adam Rose eventually received a lateral after the scramble for the football and returned the block 74 yards to the Grove City 6. After a Grove City penalty, Muschette's three-yard touchdown extended the lead to 27-17.

Muschette added a seven-yard touchdown run with 6:26 left to close the scoring. Muschette finished with 219 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Geneva outgained Grove City 448-305 and held a 37:05-22:55 edge in time of possession. Geneva quarterback David Girardi threw for 178 yards on 13-of-18 accuracy.

Sophomore linebacker Jason Ferguson (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) recorded a team-high 14 tackles for Grove City. Ferguson also had 1.5 quarterback sacks. Senior defensive tackle Tony Clark (Stow, Ohio/Stow) and sophomore linebacker Vince Angelo (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) both had sacks. Angelo also forced a fumble. Sophomore linebacker Marc Shamley (Orlando, Fla./Pine Castle) had nine tackles and a half-sack.

Saturday's game does not count in the PAC standings due to Geneva's provisional membership status in NCAA Division III.

Grove City will visit Thomas More next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in PAC action.
