Wolverines fall to 2-2
WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team dropped to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines dropped a 42-16 decision to host Waynesburg (2-1, 2-0 PAC) at Wiley Stadium.
Waynesburg jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter and then broke the game open with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns.
Grove City cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 21-7 with 7:03 left in the second quarter when junior tailback Blaine Miller (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) pulled in a 73-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Zach Gross (Butler, Pa./Knoch). The 73-yard completion is the second-longest pass completion in program history.
Waynesburg pushed its lead to 28-7 with 2:17 left in the half on Jeff Young's 36-yard touchdown reception from Josh Graham. However, Grove City countered by moving 71 yards in just 62 seconds. Gross capped the seven-play drive by throwing a 16-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Will McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark). Junior kicker Craig Bicehouse (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock) added the conversion, bringing the Wolverines to within 28-14 at halftime.
Waynesburg extended the lead to 35-14 with 11 minutes remaining in the third quarter on Young's 17-yard touchdown reception. Young also caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Graham in the first quarter.
The Yellow Jackets scored their final touchdown with 4:06 left in the third quarter when Jordan Helmick intercepted a deflected Gross pass and returned it 28 yards to the end zone.
Waynesburg conceded a safety to Grove City with 52 seconds left, closing the scoring.
Miller caught six passes for 106 yards while McCoy had four catches for 47 yards. Gross completed 15 of 33 passes for 188 yards in his first career start. Sophomore Mike McDonald (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) completed five of nine attempts for 44 yards. Freshman Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) completed two of eight passes for 42 yards.
Defensively, sophomore safety Shawn Mercer (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) intercepted his first career pass. Senior safety Mark Rossol (Waterville, Ohio/Toledo Christian) recorded a team-high 10 tackles. Junior linebacker Vince Angelo (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) added seven stops.
For Waynesburg, Graham completed 16 of 23 passes for 200 yards. Justin Falcon ran for 110 yards on 19 carries. Waynesburg out-gained Grove City 358-207. The Yellow Jackets also had a 7 1/2-minute edge in time of possession.
Grove City converted two of 14 third-down opportunities. Waynesburg went 3 for 13 on third down.
Grove City will host Thomas More Saturday, October 9 in the annual Homecoming game at Robert E. Thorn Field. The Wolverines are idle next Saturday.
