Grove City falls on road
LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team fell to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday afternoon with a 42-17 setback to Saint Vincent at Chuck Noll Field. Saint Vincent (2-5, 2-2) jumped out to a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter and then sealed the win with three fourth-quarter touchdowns.
Grove City closed to within 21-10 two minutes into the fourth quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by junior tailback Blaine Miller (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal). Miller's run capped a 13-play, 49-yard drive for the Wolverines.
However, Saint Vincent pushed its lead to 28-10 at the 11:02 mark when Sheldon Loughner pulled in a 54-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Smetanka. Loughner later caught a 30-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-13 to give Saint Vincent a 35-10 lead with 5:55 remaining.
Sixteen seconds later, Saint Vincent safety Terry Kernan intercepted a deflected pass and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown.
Grove City closed the scoring with 15 seconds left in the game when senior wingback A.J. Tapper (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Mike McDonald (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick).
Saint Vincent took a 7-0 lead with 12:22 left in the first quarter on Mike Kale's five-yard touchdown run. Grove City cut the deficit to 7-3 with 7:45 remaining on a season-long 40-yard field goal by senior kicker Craig Bicehouse (Prospect, Pa./Slippery Rock).
Smetanka threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Christian Sutton and a one-yard score to Loughner to give the Bearcats a 21-3 lead.
Miller ran for a team-high 63 yards on 17 carries. Freshman quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) completed 17 of 36 passes for 155 yards. McDonald completed three of five attempts for 23 yards.
Senior Luke O'Hara (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) caught four passes for 43 yards while Miller had three catches for 34 yards. Junior Will McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) also had three receptions which netted 33 yards. Senior wide receiver Zach Summy (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) also caught three balls.
Senior free safety Mark Rossol (Waterville, Ohio/Toledo Christian) recorded nine tackles for Grove City while junior linebacker Tim Irwin (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) had eight stops. Senior cornerback Chris Korn (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) intercepted a pass and returned it 17 yards to set up the Wolverines' first touchdown in the third quarter. Junior defensive tackle Marcus Chakot (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) recorded a sack.
Smetanka completed 22 of 30 passes for 336 yards. Loughner caught six passes for 130 yards. Tom Quirin had eight receptions for 102 yards. Kale ran for 77 yards on 15 attempts.
Saint Vincent outgained Grove City 435-241.
Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in conference play.
