Wolverines whip Bison, 21-7
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College defense forced four turnovers and recorded three sacks while the offense assembled a balanced attack Saturday afternoon to help vault the Wolverines to a 21-7 victory over visiting Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field. It is Grove City's seventh straight home win over Bethany.
Junior middle linebacker Jason Ferguson (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) intercepted two passes in Grove City territory while senior cornerback Chris Korn (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) picked off a pass to help end the first half. Senior free safety Mark Rossol (Waterville, Ohio/Toledo Christian) forced a fourth-quarter fumble at the Grove City 1, which junior linebacker Tim Irwin (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) recovered for a touchback.
Grove City trailed 7-0 late in the second quarter but pulled into a tie with 46 seconds left on a 19-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) to junior wide receiver Will McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark). The touchdown capped a nine-play, 95-yard drive.
The Wolverines then pulled ahead with 3:26 left in the third quarter on Pell's 31-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Luke O'Hara (New Castle, Pa./Shenango). O'Hara's catch finished off an eight-play, 70-yard drive.
Bethany drove into Grove City territory early in the fourth quarter and had first-and-10 at the Wolverine 17. Quarterback Matt Grimard completed a pass to Fletcher Coffman, who fumbled inside the 1 after being hit by Rossol. Irwin recovered the ball in the end zone, preserving the 14-7 lead with 9:04 left.
Later in the period, Ferguson intercepted a Grimard pass and returned it to the Bethany 31. Seven plays later, junior tailback Blaine Miller (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) bulled into the end zone from one yard out with 2:16 left. On the drive, Pell completed a 16-yard completion to senior wingback A.J. Tapper (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) on third-and-15.
Ferguson's second interception of the game sealed the win with 43 seconds left.
Bethany took a 7-0 lead with 6:40 left in the first quarter on Grimard's 10-yard touchdown run. Early in the second quarter, Bethany drove to the Grove City 3 but turned the ball over in downs. The Wolverines then answered with their nine-play, 95-yard touchdown drive.
Pell completed 15 of 21 passes for 193 yards. O'Hara caught six passes for 73 yards. McCoy had three catches for 51 yards and Miller added three receptions for 43 yards. Miller also ran for 75 yards on 25 carries.
Grimard completed 15 of 29 passes for 137 yards. He also ran for 53 yards on 15 attempts. Eric Walker ran for 69 yards on 16 carries.
Rossol posted a game-high 12 tackles. Ferguson added eight stops. Korn and Irwin each made seven tackles. Junior nose tackle Jarred Frawley (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) posted 1.5 sacks. Junior linebacker Marc Shamley (Orlando, Fla./Pine Castle Christian) posted a sack while Scott Linkowski (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) added a half-sack.
Bethany (4-5, 3-3 PAC) owned a 300-297 edge in total yardage. Each team had 18 first downs. Each team converted seven of 13 third-down situations. Grove City held a 32:38-27:22 advantage in time of possession.
Grove City (4-5, 2-4 PAC) wraps up the regular season next Saturday against visiting Thiel in the 27th annual battle for the prestigious Mercer County Cup at Thorn Field.
