Waynesburg edges Wolverines
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team dropped a 32-26 decision to visiting Waynesburg Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field on Homecoming.
Grove City trailed late but the Wolverines took over at the Waynesburg 44 with 2:16 left when senior nose tackle Jarred Frawley (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) recovered a Bertrand Ngampa fumble. Junior linebacker Mario Posteraro (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) forced the turnover.
However, Grove City could not covert the turnover into the go-ahead points as the Wolverines turned over the ball on downs. Two negative yardage plays put Grove City in a 4th-and-27 situation and Waynesburg's Marvin Sampson intercepted Grove City quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) on fourth down to secure the win.
After Waynesburg took a 6-0 lead on Justin Falcon's three-yard touchdown run with 10:05 left in the first quarter, the Wolverines countered with a seven-play, 60-yard drive that ended on a two-yard touchdown run by senior tailback Blaine Miller (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal). The conversion failed, keeping the game tied 6-6.
Miller scored on a four-yard touchdown run with 4:53 left in first quarter, putting the Wolverines ahead 12-6. An interception by junior safety Shawn Mercer (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) set up Grove City's 24-yard touchdown drive.
Jamelle Bowers tied the game at 12 with a 30-yard run with 12:14 left in the first half but again, Grove City quickly answered to reclaim the lead. Sophomore wide receiver Anthony Ritchie (Big Rock, Ill./Wheaton Academy) hauled in a 38-yard touchdown pass from Pell to give Grove City a 19-12 lead with 10:10 left in the half.
Ngampa closed the first-half scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run with 7:28 remaining in the half. Waynesburg would then take its first lead of the game with 1:35 left in the third quarter on Dominic Moore's two-yard touchdown run.
Grove City tied the game at 26 with 10:25 left on a one-yard touchdown run by Miller, his third of the game. The run capped a 15-play, 69-yard drive that used 6:03 of clock. Waynesburg pulled back ahead just 1:28 later on Jeff Young's 37-yard touchdown catch.
Miller led Grove City with 58 rushing yards on 21 carries while sophomore Jimmy Bailey (North East, Pa./North East) added 48 yards on five carries. Pell completed 13 of 28 passes for 169 yards. Ritchie caught six passes for 96 yards.
Ngampa led Waynesburg with 112 yards on 21 carries. Quarterback Josh Graham went 13 of 23 for 160 yards. Young caught five passes for 82 yards. Waynesburg outgained Grove City 359-281. The Yellow Jackets had 20 first downs and Grove City had 19 first downs.
Sophomore linebacker Ryan Althausen (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), junior cornerback Mike Brown (Corry, Pa./Corry) and freshman linebacker Brian Wells (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) all had seven tackles. Posteraro recorded a sack.
Waynesburg (2-1, 2-0 PAC) committed 14 penalties for 116 yards. Grove City had just one penalty, which cost the Wolverines 15 yards.
Grove City is off next week. The Wolverines visit Thomas More October 8.
