Thomas More tops Grove City
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Grove City College football team dropped a 37-7 decision to host Thomas More (5-0, 3-0) Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Bank of Kentucky Field. Thomas More entered the game ranked sixth nationally in the American Football Coaches Association Division III poll and eighth in the D3Football.com Top 25 poll.
Grove City pulled into a 7-7 tie with 2:24 left in the first quarter when sophomore quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) fired a 13-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Anthony Ritchie (Big Rock, Ill./Wheaton Academy).
Thomas More took control of the game with 16 second-quarter points, however. Aaron Walter kicked a 37-yard field goal with 12:59 left in the half to put the Saints up 10-7.
Quarterback Robert Kues then threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Shelton and a 39-yarder to Domonique Hayden, giving Thomas More a 23-7 halftime lead. Shelton's score came at the 7:47 mark while Hayden's touchdown came with 1:08 left in the half.
Hayden pushed the lead to 30-7 with 4:39 left in the third quarter by scoring on a 26-yard run. Thomas More closed the scoring with 5:50 remaining when Kues threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Tony Bell. A Thomas More interception set up the Saints' final touchdown drive of the game.
Thomas More took a 7-0 lead on its first offensive play from scrimmage as Kues threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Corie Cartmell.
Pell completed 14 of 23 passes for 100 yards. He also ran for a team-high 45 yards on 10 carries. Freshman Sam Ivan (Whitehouse, Ohio/Toledo Christian) added 32 yards on six carries in his collegiate debut. Ritchie caught four passes for 45 yards while senior tight end Anthony Reda (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) pulled in four receptions for 27 yards.
Sophomore safety Chris Gibbs (Akron, Ohio/Revere) led Grove City with 10 tackles and three pass deflections. Junior cornerback Mike Brown (Corry, Pa./Corry) added seven tackles and also forced and recovered a fumble. Senior nose tackle Jarred Frawley (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and freshman safety Jason Skyrm (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) both had sacks.
Kues completed 19 of 26 passes for 264 yards and four touchdowns. Hayden ran for 86 yards on 16 attempts. Cartmell caught six balls for 91 yards.
Grove City owned a 32:31-27:29 edge in time of possession. Thomas More outgained Grove City 414-242. The Saints had 20 first downs and Grove City had 15 first downs. Grove City had 121 yards rushing and 121 passing yards.
Grove City will visit Geneva next Saturday night at 7 p.m. in conference action.
