Turnovers cost Grove City

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team dropped a 23-7 decision to Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Geneva Saturday night at Reeves Field.

The Wolverines accumulated 340 yards of offense but committed six turnovers, including two inside the Geneva 20-yard line. Grove City also failed to score on two other trips inside the Geneva 5.

Grove City took a 7-3 lead with 11 seconds left in the first quarter when senior tailback Blaine Miller (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) scored on a 22-yard touchdown run. Freshman kicker Ethan Witmer (Columbiana, Ohio/South Range) added the extra point.

Miller finished with a season-high 123 rushing yards on 21 attempts. He also caught a game-high four passes for 66 yards.

Geneva took a 9-7 lead with 11:42 remaining in the first half when Vince Larson caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Zack Hayward. The conversion failed.

Geneva sealed the win with two touchdown runs in the final 5:45 of the game. Rocco Collavechia scored on a 13-yard run with 5:45 left, pushing the lead to 16-7. Collavechia closed the scoring with a 75-yard run on third down with 1:23 remaining in the game.

Collavechia led Geneva with 178 rushing yards on 21 carries. He also went 2 for 7 passing for 28 yards. Hayward threw for 77 yards on 9-of-17 accuracy. Grove City intercepted each quarterback once.

For Grove City, sophomore quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) threw for 144 yards on 12-of-24 passing. Geneva intercepted him three times. Pell also ran for 57 yards on nine carries.

Junior wide receiver Dustin Anewalt (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) hauled in four receptions for 45 yards. Grove City finished the night with 21 first downs, along with 196 yards rushing and 144 passing yards.

Senior linebacker Tim Irwin (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) recorded eight tackles and an interception for Grove City. Junior cornerback Mike Brown (Corry, Pa./Corry) ended the first half with an interception in the end zone. He also had seven stops.

Senior defensive tackle Marcus Chakot (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) recorded a sack and senior nose tackle Jarred Frawley (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) had two tackles for loss.

Geneva finished the game with 373 offensive yards.

Grove City will host Saint Vincent next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field.
