Grove City topples Saint Vincent

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Led by a defense that produced four takeaways and four quarterback sacks and an efficient offense, the Grove City College football earned a 21-16 victory over visiting Saint Vincent (3-4, 2-3 PAC) Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field.

Junior cornerback Kurt Devlin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) tied a single-game Grove City record by intercepting three passes while senior cornerback Aaron Palmieri (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) also intercepted a pass.

Meanwhile, senior defensive end Zack Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) posted a pair of quarterback sacks for the Wolverines, who limited Saint Vincent to a 3-for-13 effort on third down in the game.

Grove City forged a 7-7 tie with 14:37 left in the first half when senior tailback Blaine Miller (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) scored on a two-yard touchdown plunge. Saint Vincent drove to the Grove City 7 on its subsequent possession but Palmieri's interception in the end zone ended the threat.

Later in the quarter, Devlin intercepted a pass at the Saint Vincent 38. Eight plays later, Grove City took a 13-7 lead when sophomore quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) fired a 17-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Anthony Ritchie (Big Rock, Ill./Wheaton Academy) with 1:06 left in the half. The conversion failed.

Grove City's lead swelled to 21-7 with eight minutes left in the third quarter on Miller's nine-yard touchdown sprint around left end. Pell then threw a successful two-point conversion to Miller, pushing the lead to 14 points.

Devlin set up the drive with his second interception. Pell hit Ritchie on a 27-yard completion on the first play after the interception.

Saint Vincent cut the lead to 21-14 when Jairus Marlow scored on an 18-yard reverse with 6:57 left. The Bearcats regained possession after a Grove City punt but Devlin's third interception of the game ended the drive with 1:13 left.

The Wolverines conceded a safety with 11 seconds left when punter Joe Diani (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) stepped out of the end zone.

Devlin also led Grove City with 10 tackles and Palmieri had nine stops. Sophomore linebacker Ryan Althausen (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) had eight tackles and sack while senior defensive tackle Marcus Chakot (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) also had a sack.

Miller ran for 67 yards while Pell completed 16 of 23 passes for 139 yards. Ritchie caught six passes for 75 yards and senior tight end Anthony Reda (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) pulled in four passes for 31 yards. Grove City went 7 for 15 on third down and owned a 31:30-28:30 advantage in time of possession.

Saint Vincent outgained Grove City 298-227. Huey Ehredt ran for 65 yards on 11 carries while Mike Kale added 61 yards on 13 attempts. Smetanka threw for 158 yards on 17-of-32 passing.

Devlin became the first Grove City player with three interceptions in one game since Brock McCullough had three picks October 16, 1999 in a 24-21 Homecoming victory over Waynesburg. Current head coach Chris Smith also shares that single-game interception record with three picks in a 10-7 win over Bethany November 16, 1968.

Grove City will host Washington & Jefferson next Saturday in conference action at 1:30 p.m.
