Bethany clips Grove City
BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College football team dropped a 33-14 decision to host Bethany College Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Bison Stadium.
Bethany (4-4, 3-4 PAC) broke a scoreless tie in the third quarter by scoring a pair of touchdowns after pivotal plays on punts. The Bison took a 7-0 lead with 11:00 left in the third quarter on a one-yard run by quarterback Matt Grimard. A 44-yard punt return by Alex Evans to the Grove City 17 set up the touchdown.
On Grove City's next possession, Bethany's Michael Howcott blocked a punt that the Bison eventually recovered at the Grove City 1. Nico Irizarry scored on the next play, pushing the lead to 14-0 at the 7:47 mark.
Grove City cut the lead in half five minutes later, though, as sophomore quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) scored on a 14-yard scramble with 2:41 left in the quarter. Pat Donoughe (Summerhill, Pa./Forest Hills) added the extra point. Pell's touchdown capped an 11-play, 61-yard drive that used exactly five minutes.
Bethany took control of the game in the fourth quarter on a pair of Grimard touchdown passes. He threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Gage Lotozo with 10:21 left and then threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Johnathon Foster on fourth-and-22 with 6:24 remaining.
Pell completed a four-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Anthony Reda (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton-La Salle) with 3:44 left, bringing the Wolverines to within 27-14. Bethany halfback Eric Walker scored on a one-yard run with 54 seconds left, closing the scoring.
Pell completed 14 of 36 passes for 147 yards. Senior tailback Blaine Miller (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) caught three passes for 45 yards. Junior Dustin Anewalt (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) had three receptions for 38 yards and sophomore Anthony Ritchie (Big Rock, Ill./Wheaton Academy) caught three balls for 18 yards. Miller led Grove City with 55 rushing yards on 20 attempts.
Defensively, freshman safety Jason Skyrm (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) recorded 10 tackles and an interception for Grove City. Senior linebacker Tim Irwin (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) recorded a team-high 11 tackles. Sophomore safety Chris Gibbs (Akron, Ohio/Revere) posted eight stop and forced a fumble that sophomore linebacker Ryan Althausen (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) recovered.
Senior end Zack Patterson (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) and senior defensive tackle Marcus Chakot (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) both had sacks.
Grimard completed 16 of 25 passes for 209 yards. He also ran for 60 yards on 20 carries. Irizarry led Bethany with 71 rushing yards on seven carries. Evans led Bethany with 52 receiving yards on four catches.
Bethany owned a 367-259 advantage in total yards. Bethany went 7 for 12 on third down while Grove City converted 7 of 16 third-down situations.
Grove City concludes the 2011 regular season next Saturday at Thiel in the 28th annual battle for the Mercer County Cup.
