CMU edges Grove City, 23-20

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College football team opened the 2012 season with a 23-20 setback at longtime rival Carnegie Mellon Saturday afternoon at Gesling Stadium.

The game featured six lead changes. Carnegie Mellon (1-0) took the lead for good with 5:06 left in the game on Rob Kalkstein's 45-yard touchdown pass to Tim Kikta.

Grove City had two possessions after CMU pulled ahead but the Wolverines could not reclaim the lead.

Grove City took the lead on its first drive of the game when senior tailback Shane Kaclik (Mars, Pa./Mars) slammed into the end zone on a two-yard touchdown run with 8:40 left in the first quarter. The run capped a 12-play, 67-yard drive.

CMU grabbed a 7-6 lead with 2:56 remaining in the opening quarter on Jake Nardone's five-yard run. Connor Young's 43-yard field goal midway through the second quarter pushed the Tartans' lead to 10-6.

The Wolverines retook the lead, 13-10, with 1:38 left in the first half on a 13-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) to junior wide receiver Anthony Ritchie (Big Rock, Ill./Wheaton Academy).

However, CMU took the lead with just 11 seconds left in the half when Kalkstein fired a 52-yard touchdown pass to Tim Swanson.

Ritchie's 21-yard touchdown catch from Pell with 5:50 left in the third quarter put Grove City back on top, 20-16. Freshman kicker Dane Mossgrove (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) added the extra point.

Ritchie led Grove City with seven catches for 82 yards. Kaclik caught four balls for 16 yards. Pell completed 21 of 39 passes for 188 yards. CMU did intercept three passes, however.

Kaclik led Grove City on the ground with 65 rushing yards on 18 attempts.

Defensively, junior cornerback Chris Gibbs (Akron, Ohio/Revere) led the Wolverines with 12 tackles, including two for loss. Senior defensive end Marc Shamley (Orlando, Fla./Pine Castle Christian) recorded one sack and recovered a fumble. Sophomore nose tackle Jake Johnston (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay) also forced and recovered a fumble.

Senior linebacker Jason Ferguson (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) and junior linebacker Brandon Miller (Corry, Pa./Corry) each forced fumbles. Freshman Steve Maskrey (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) deflected a CMU punt.

Kalkstein completed eight of 16 passes for 192 yards. Jared Delello led the Tartans with 71 rushing yards on 15 carries. CMU outgained Grove City, 373-305.

Grove City executed 81 offensive plays and went 10 for 19 on third down. The Wolverines also held a 34:35-25:25 advantage in time of possession. Grove City did not commit a penalty in the game.

The game featured an inclement weather delay of 1 hour, 50 minutes early in the fourth quarter.

Grove City will host Anderson (Ind.) next Saturday in the 2012 home opener at Robert E. Thorn Field. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.
