Grove City tops Anderson in 2012 home opener
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team opened the home portion of its 2012 schedule Saturday afternoon with a 47-10 victory over visiting Anderson (Ind.) at Robert E. Thorn Field.
Senior tailback Shane Kaclik (Mars, Pa./Mars) ran for a career-high 153 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries, helping Grove City accumulate 451 yards of total offense. Grove City (1-1) finished the game with 291 rushing yards and 32 first downs. Grove City produced six touchdown drives of at least nine plays and owned a 36:50-23:10 edge in time of possession.
Kaclik's first touchdown of the game gave Grove City a 7-0 lead with 5:20 left in the first quarter, capping a 15-play, 66-yard drive. Anderson (0-2) cut the lead to 7-3 early in the second quarter on Kyle Green's 20-yard field goal but Grove City quickly pushed the lead to 20-3 in the period.
Junior quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) fired a 15-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Tony Britt (Kent, Ohio/Kent Roosevelt) with 11:01 left in the half, giving Grove City a 14-3 lead. Later in the quarter, Pell threw a five-yard touchdown pass to junior linebacker/blocking back Ethan Albinger (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) to extend the Wolverine lead to 20-3 at the 4:57 mark.
Anderson tailback Marcus Spann scored on a 39-yard touchdown run 4:34 left in the half, cutting the lead to 20-10. However, Grove City scored the final 27 points of the game.
Kaclik bulled in from the 1 with six seconds left in the half to give Grove City a 27-10 halftime lead. Pell's one-yard sneak into the end zone with 5:56 left in the third quarter extended the advantage to 33-10.
In the fourth quarter, Kaclik scored on a one-yard run with 7:11 left. Junior linebacker Brandon Miller (Corry, Pa./Corry) closed the scoring when he returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown with 1:51 left in the game.
Pell completed 16 of 27 attempts for 144 yards. Senior Dustin Anewalt (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) caught six passes for 76 yards. Nine different receivers caught at least one pass for Grove City.
Junior linebacker Ben Manwaring (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) led the Wolverine defense with 11 tackles. Senior cornerback Mike Brown (Corry, Pa./Corry) also intercepted a pass while junior linebacker Ryan Althausen (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and freshman defensive end Ryan Hickey (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) both had sacks. Senior end Marc Shamley (Orlando, Fla./Pine Castle Christian) recovered a fumble.
Freshman kicker Dane Mossgrove (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) booted three extra points and senior Kurt Devlin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) went 2 for 2 on conversions.
Spann led Anderson with 103 rushing yards on 16 carries. Saturday's game marked the first meeting between the teams.
Grove City will visit Washington & Jefferson next Saturday night in both teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference.
