W&J slips past Grove City, 24-17

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior tailback Shane Kaclik (Mars, Pa./Mars) ran for a career-high 161 yards on 23 carries Saturday night but the Grove City College football team dropped a hard-fought 24-17 decision at Washington & Jefferson in both teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference opener at Cameron Stadium.

Grove City (1-2, 0-1 PAC) trailed 24-10 in the fourth quarter but cut the lead in half when junior quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) fired a five-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Anthony Ritchie (Big Rock, Ill./Wheaton Academy) with 3:39 left in the game.

A bad punt snap by W&J gave Grove City possession at the W&J 18.

Grove City trailed 7-3 late in the first half but took the lead on Kaclik's two-yard touchdown run with 36 seconds. Kaclik's touchdown capped a seven-play, 65-yard drive.

W&J took a 14-10 lead with 8:20 left in the third quarter on Tim McNerney's two-yard touchdown run. The Presidents pushed the lead to 21-10 with 17 seconds left in the period when Matt Bliss threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Alex Baroffio.

W&J broke a scoreless tie with 2:09 left in the first half on an eight-yard run by Dion Wiegand. Grove City answered with 9:05 remaining in the first half as senior Kurt Devlin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) drilled a 27-yard field goal, the first of his career.

Pell finished the game 12 of 25 for 96 yards. Ritchie led the Wolverines with five catches for 35 yards. Senior wide receiver Dustin Anewalt (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) had three receptions for a team-high 37 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Jason Skyrm (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) led Grove City with 12 tackles and junior linebacker Ryan Althausen (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) had 10 tackles and a sack. Senior tackle George Matthews (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes) and senior linebacker Jason Ferguson (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) also had sacks.

Grove City outgained Washington & Jefferson, 274-271. Bliss completed 15 of 23 passes for 126 yards. McNerney ran for 115 yards on 22 carries. Baroffio caught nine balls for 83 yards.

Each team had 10 penalties. Grove City's infractions cost the team 103 yards while W&J accrued 89 penalty yards. Grove City went 3 for 14 on third down and W&J converted 4 of 15 third-down situations.

Grove City won last year's meeting 24-21. In 2010, W&J pulled out a 21-14 win over the Wolverines.

Grove City will host Bethany next Saturday at 2 p.m. in the annual Homecoming game at Robert E. Thorn Field.
