Three to play in Tazon de Estrellas

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Three Grove City College football players have been named to Team Stars and Stripes, a Division III all-star team that will compete in the fourth annual Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) Saturday at 2 p.m. at Estadio Tecnologico in Monterrey, Mexico.

Senior linebacker Ben Manwaring (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point), senior offensive tackle Ethan Martin (Hancock, Md./Hancock) and senior wide receiver Anthony Ritchie (Big Rock, Ill./Wheaton Academy) will help Team Stars and Stripes compete against a 64-man team of Mexican college all-stars from CONADIEP, the national conference of private schools in Mexico.

Manwaring led Grove City with 103 tackles and 3.5 quarterback sacks this season. Manwaring also had eight tackles for loss and an interception. He started all 10 games at middle linebacker and earned Second Team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference recognition.

Martin started all 10 games at right tackle for Grove City and concluded his career by starting 20 straight games at tackle. He earned three letters for Grove City and received Honorable Mention All-PAC following the season.

Ritchie led Grove City with 55 catches and 774 receiving yards. The 774 yards are the fourth-most in one season at Grove City and the most since 1995, when Tom Flenner gained 843 receiving yards. Ritchie also led Grove City with 899 all-purpose yards. He caught five touchdown passes this season and tied Rick Sems' career touchdown reception record at Grove City with 17. Ritchie ranks third all-time in program history with 144 receptions and 1,801 receiving yards.

He earned All-PAC Honorable Mention from the league's head coaches after the season.

It is the fourth straight year that Grove City players will play for Team Stars and Stripes. In 2010, offensive tackle Pete Polesnak helped Team Stars and Stripes to a 48-7 victory over the Mexican all-star team. Two years ago, nose tackle Jarred Frawley competed for Team Stars and Stripes in a 45-27 setback. In 2012, guard Josh Bermann, linebacker Jason Ferguson and tailback Shane Kaclik helped Team Stars and Stripes to a 32-15 victory over the CONADIEP squad.

Three Grove City players participated in the Tazon de Estrellas’ predecessor, the Aztec Bowl. Brock McCullough played for the United States in 2000 while Aaron Margo (2005) and Matt Gregg (2007) also played in the Aztec Bowl.

The United States is 6-1 with Grove City players competing in the Aztec Bowl or Tazon de Estrellas. Saturday's game is available online at
