Grove City thumps Anderson, 42-0

ANDERSON, Ind. -- Led by a defensive effort that recorded seven sacks and held host Anderson to just 12 first downs, the Grove City College football team improved to 2-0 overall by earning a 42-0 victory over Anderson Saturday afternoon at Macholtz Stadium.

Grove City earned its first shutout since a 44-0 victory over Saint Vincent November 3, 2007. It is the Wolverines' first road shutout since a 56-0 win at Thiel October 2, 1999.

Offensively, Grove City amassed 413 total yards and 23 first downs. The Wolverines also went 9 for 13 on third down and scored on six of their seven trips inside Anderson's 20-yard line.

Senior quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) completed 16 of 21 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns while sophomore tailback Steve Maskrey (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) ran for 82 yards and two scores on 18 attempts. Sophomore quarterback Josh Peach (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) ran for 61 yards and Pell added 42 rushing yards, helping the Wolverines accumulate 226 yards on the ground.

Grove City took a 7-0 lead on its first possession of the game when Pell fired a 12-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Khalil Ervin (Malvern, Pa./Phoenixville) with 7:51 left in the first quarter. Freshman kicker Ryan Stewart (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) kicked the first of his four extra points.

Pell pushed the lead to 14-0 with 12:09 left in the first half when he scored on a 15-yard touchdown run. On Grove City's next possession, Maskrey capped a seven-play, 53-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run at the 8:22 mark.

Maskrey closed the first-half scoring with 1:57 to go when he bulled in from the 1.

With 3:20 left in the third quarter, Pell punctuated a 12-play, 80-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. In the fourth quarter, Pell threw a four-yard touchdown pass to junior wingback Brian Wells (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) with 13:34 remaining. Freshman Cole McCandless (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) kicked the conversion after each of the final two touchdowns.

Ervin led Grove City with five receptions for 57 yards. Junior wingback Sam Ivan (Whitehouse, Ohio/Toledo Christian) caught four passes for 62 yards and sophomore wide receiver David Folkmire (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) caught a pair of passes for 39 yards.

Senior linebacker Ben Manwaring (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) led the Grove City defense with eight tackles, including two for loss. He also had a sack. Junior defensive end Reese Swatsworth (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) recorded a career-high 1.5 sacks while sophomore nose tackle Brent Veerman (Powell, Ohio/Columbus Crusaders), sophomore linebacker Tyler Campbell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) and sophomore linebacker Jason Dillon (Boyds, Md./DeMatha Catholic) all had one sack each.

Senior safety Joe Diani (West Leechburg, Pa./Leechburg) and sophomore cornerback Slater Simek (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) both intercepted passes. Simek also broke up three other passes.

Anderson quarterback Chandler Farrow completed 15 of 25 passes for 168 yards. Brady Cavinee completed nine of 17 attempts for 40 yards. Both quarterbacks threw interceptions. Keith Thomas led Anderson (0-2) with six catches for 63 yards.

Grove City held a 31:46-28:14 edge in time of possession. Anderson committed 11 penalties for 107 yards while Grove City's five penalties cost the Wolverines 40 yards. Anderson went 3 for 15 on third down.

Grove City will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play next Saturday night at Robert E. Thorn Field against visiting Washington & Jefferson. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
