W&J tops Grove City
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team opened its Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule Saturday night with a 40-19 setback against visiting Washington & Jefferson at Robert E. Thorn Field.
W&J took a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter but Grove City broke through when sophomore wingback Zach Rader (Butler, Pa./Butler) fired a 56-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Khalil Ervin (Malvern, Pa./Phoenixville) on an option pass with 11:19 left in the half.
The conversion failed, however, keeping the score 14-6.
W&J extended its lead to 21-6 with four minutes left in the half on Dion Wiegand's 76-yard touchdown run, his third score of the half. He also ran for two more touchdowns in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 33-6.
Grove City pulled to within 33-12 with 10:01 left in the game when sophomore tailback Steve Maskrey (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) scored on a two-yard run. He later scored from three yards out with 3:12 remaining, closing the game's scoring.
Maskrey led Grove City (2-1, 0-1) with 48 rushing yards on 14 carries. Senior quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy) completed 21 of 35 passes for 214 yards.
Senior wide receiver Anthony Ritchie (Big Rock, Ill./Wheaton Academy) tied a career-high with nine catches for 98 yards. Ervin added six catches for a career-high 109 yards and Rader had four catches, good for 34 yards.
Grove City finished with 289 passing yards and 352 total yards for the game.
Senior linebacker Ben Manwaring (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) led the Grove City defense with 14 tackles. Senior safety Chris Gibbs (Akron, Ohio/Revere) had 12 tackles and a forced fumble. Junior linebacker Jason Skyrm (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) added 10 stops, including three for loss.
Senior linebacker Ethan Albinger (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) recorded a sack.
Wiegand finished the game with 172 yards on 24 carries. Three W&J quarterbacks combined to complete 17 of 22 passes for 155 yards. W&J finished with 475 total offensive yards. The Presidents had 26 first downs while Grove City had 21.
Grove City is now 3-4 all-time in night games at Thorn Field. The home team had won each of the last three meetings in the Grove City-W&J series.
Grove City will visit Bethany next Saturday at 2 p.m. in conference action.
