Wolverines humble Westminster, 24-21
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team improved to 3-2 overall Saturday afternoon by pulling out a 24-21 Homecoming victory over visiting Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field.
Westminster had a chance to tie the game in the closing moments but sophomore defensive tackle Ryan Hickey (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) deflected Justin Dahl's 26-yard field goal with 42 seconds left.
Westminster (1-3, 1-2 PAC) had one final possession but Grove City sophomore linebacker Bobby Tuttle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) intercepted a desperation pass at the Wolverine 30 as time expired.
Grove City took a 7-0 lead on the opening possession of the game as the Wolverines assembled a 14-play, 58-yard drive that consumed 6 minutes, 53 seconds. Sophomore tailback Steve Maskrey (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) scored on a four-yard run to cap the drive.
The Wolverines pushed the lead to 10-0 with 9:44 left in the first half when freshman kicker Ryan Stewart (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) drilled a 27-yard field goal.
Westminster pulled to within 10-7 with 1:36 remaining in the second quarter on Tre Sims' nine-yard touchdown run. Grove City quickly answered, however, by moving 66 yards in 65 seconds. Senior quarterback Brian Pell (Streamwood, Ill./Wheaton Academy), who went 3 for 3 passing on the drive, scored on a one-yard sneak with 25 seconds remaining in the half.
The lead grew to 24-7 at the 11:47 mark of the third quarter when sophomore wingback Zach Rader (Butler, Pa./Butler) threw a 26-yard touchdown strike to senior wide receiver Khalil Ervin (Malvern, Pa./Phoenixville) on an option pass. That came one play after sophomore nose tackle Brent Veerman (Powell, Ohio/Columbus Crusaders) recovered a Westminster fumble at the Titan 26.
Westminster rallied in the fourth quarter with a pair of touchdowns. Tyler Banks scored on a two-yard run with 11:36 left, cutting the lead to 24-14. Following a Grove City turnover in Westminster territory, Dak Britt threw a 76-yard touchdown pass to Collin Wallace with 7:19 left.
Maskrey led Grove City with 52 rushing yards on 16 carries. Junior wingback Sam Ivan (Whitehouse, Ohio/Toledo Christian) ran for 39 yards on four carries.
Ervin caught five passes for 68 yards and senior Anthony Ritchie (Big Rock, Ill./Wheaton Academy) had five receptions for 55 yards. Rader caught three balls for 24 yards. Pell went 19 for 34 for 162 yards. He threw one interception.
Senior linebacker Ben Manwaring (Lisle, N.Y./Whitney Point) recorded eight tackles and an interception. He had two tackles for loss. Junior linebacker Jason Skyrm (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) also had eight stops and a sack. Senior safety Chris Gibbs (Akron, Ohio/Revere) led the defense with 11 total tackles.
Britt completed 22 of 39 passes for 276 yards. Banks ran for 53 yards on 17 carries.
Westminster outgained Grove City 378-315. The Wolverines owned a 31:08-28:52 edge in time of possession.
Grove City has won four of the last five meetings with Westminster. Nine of the last 10 Grove City-Westminster games have been decided by seven points or less.
The Wolverines (1-2 PAC) host Waynesburg next Saturday at 1:30 in conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field.
